Costa Rica All-Inclusive Resorts (2026): 7 We'd Book in Guanacaste and Beyond

Costa Rica's all-inclusives are clustered on the dry Pacific coast of Guanacaste, an hour or so from Liberia airport, with one outlier on the Nicoya Peninsula. They trade the Caribbean's white sand for volcanoes, monkeys and rainforest day trips. Here are the seven we would book in 2026, what changed this year, and how the green season affects your trip.

Quick answer

  • The best Costa Rica all inclusive resorts for most travelers in 2026 are The Westin Reserva Conchal (best overall, 9.1 of 10 on Trip.com), Secrets Papagayo (best adults-only, 4.5 of 5 on Tripadvisor) and Hotel Riu Guanacaste (best value for families, 8.3 of 10 on Kayak).
  • Nearly all of them are in Guanacaste on the northern Pacific coast and use Liberia airport (LIR): Planet Hollywood is about 30 minutes away, the Westin about 1 hour 15 minutes and the former Dreams Las Mareas about 1.5 hours.
  • Two big changes for 2026: Riu Palace Costa Rica is closed for renovation until April 2027, and the former Dreams Las Mareas is now listed by booking sites as JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive.
  • December to April is dry season, with almost no rain at Liberia; September and October each average more than 12 inches. The May to November green season brings lower prices and afternoon storms.
  • Costa Rica's resort beaches have darker sand and rougher surf than the Caribbean. Book here for wildlife, volcanoes and adventure day trips, not for the clearest water.

Our verdict

Our verdict: Westin for the best all-round stay, Secrets for couples, Riu for families on a budget

The Westin Reserva Conchal is our first pick because it puts a solid all-inclusive on Playa Conchal, the best beach any Costa Rica all-inclusive has, with a kids' club, golf and guest scores of 9.1 on Trip.com and 9.0 on Expedia. Food is the most common complaint, so go in expecting good rather than great dining.

Couples should book Secrets Papagayo, a 202-suite adults-only resort on a jungle hillside with strong service scores, and accept darker sand. Families watching their budget will get the most for their money at Hotel Riu Guanacaste, with 24-hour all-inclusive and a water park, as long as they can live with crowded buffets. Planet Hollywood Costa Rica is the closest to the airport, and the former Dreams Las Mareas, now listed as JW Marriott Costa Elena, is the most remote. Barceló Tambor and Occidental Tamarindo are the value picks outside Papagayo. Our picks are based on 2026 guest ratings and reviews, official resort information and prices seen in October 2026.

Costa Rica all-inclusive resorts: where they are and what changed in 2026

Costa Rica is not wall-to-wall all-inclusives like Cancun or Punta Cana. Most of the country's eco-lodges and boutique hotels are room only, and the large all-inclusive resorts sit in one region: the dry northern Pacific coast of Guanacaste, around the Gulf of Papagayo, Playa Conchal, Playa Matapalo and Tamarindo. The main exception is Barceló Tambor on the Nicoya Peninsula, closer to San José.

Three things changed in 2026 that many older guides miss:

  1. Riu Palace Costa Rica is closed. Riu's own page says the hotel is under renovation with a reopening in April 2027. Its family-oriented sister, Hotel Riu Guanacaste, is open and was renovated in 2025, per its Trip.com listing.
  2. Dreams Las Mareas has changed hands. Hyatt's Dreams page for the resort no longer loads, Google lists the Dreams listing as permanently closed, and Kayak now sells the same property as JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive. We could not confirm the official rebrand date, so check Marriott Bonvoy before booking.
  3. Planet Hollywood Costa Rica is now 'by Royalton'. The resort's own site uses that name and says taxes and gratuities are included in its all-inclusive package.

If you want an all-inclusive on the Caribbean side or near the rainforests of Arenal or Manuel Antonio, the options are thin; most travelers do a split stay instead (see the day trips section).

Our take

The Westin Reserva Conchal is the all-inclusive we would book first in Costa Rica, mainly for its beach. Playa Conchal is made of crushed shells, with lighter sand and clearer water than most of Guanacaste, and the resort sits inside the large Reserva Conchal development with a golf course, a spa, a kids' club, a very large main pool and golf carts that shuttle guests through the grounds, where reviewers regularly spot wildlife. Trip.com guests score it 9.1 of 10 and Expedia guests 9.0 from about 1,000 reviews, and July 2026 reviewers name individual staff members for their service. The weak spot is food: several 2026 reviewers found it average and the cocktails weak, specialty restaurants need same-day early-morning reservations, and service can be slow. One family reported that an accessible room was not as promised. The drive from Liberia airport is about 1 hour 15 minutes. Book the Westin if you want the best beach of any Costa Rica all-inclusive with family-friendly facilities; skip it if fine dining is your priority.

Our take

Secrets Papagayo is the adults-only all-inclusive we recommend when couples want Costa Rica rather than a Caribbean beach. The 202-suite resort, part of the Hyatt Inclusive Collection, climbs a hillside above the Gulf of Papagayo, roughly half an hour from Liberia airport by our estimate, with Preferred Club upgrades, a spa and a quiet, no-kids atmosphere. It holds 4.5 of 5 on Tripadvisor from about 6,250 reviews, the highest score of the Papagayo all-inclusives we checked, and recent reviewers single out the service. Be realistic about two things. The beach has darker sand, and some May 2026 reviewers found the water murky while others enjoyed how quiet it was. And food draws mixed reviews: an August 2026 reviewer called it average and the restaurant service disappointing. The hillside layout also means walking or waiting for shuttles. Book Secrets Papagayo for a honeymoon or couples' week that mixes resort time with volcano and wildlife day trips; skip it if a white-sand beach is non-negotiable.

Our take

Hotel Riu Guanacaste is the big, busy, good-value family all-inclusive of Costa Rica. It runs 24-hour all-inclusive, a free Splash Water World water park, seven bars, themed buffets, a steakhouse and nightly shows on long Playa Matapalo, and Trip.com says it was renovated in 2025. Guests score it 8.3 of 10 on Kayak from 1,234 reviews and 8.4 on Trip.com, and 2026 reviewers praise the grounds, the bar and restaurant staff, food variety and entertainment. The problems are those of a resort Trip.com lists at more than 1,000 rooms: crowded buffets, first-come seating and restaurants closing early, plus repeated 2026 reports of sewage or sulfur smells from drains and bugs in the pools, and one group that blamed a restaurant for illness and found management unresponsive. Its adults-focused sister, Riu Palace Costa Rica, is closed for renovation until April 2027. Book the Riu for a lively, affordable family week with a water park; skip it if you dislike crowds or want quiet and polish.

Our take

Planet Hollywood Costa Rica is the most convenient all-inclusive in the country: the resort says it is about 30 minutes from Liberia airport, and its package includes taxes and gratuities, suites, à la carte restaurants and buffets, 24-hour room service, movie-themed entertainment, fitness classes and a kids' club. Star Class upgrades add a butler, a private lounge and private beach and pool areas. It is family-friendly with no minimum age. Kayak shows 8.3 of 10 from 1,192 reviews, with staff the standout: 'great and helpful' comes up dozens of times, and the buffet gets praise too. The beach is the consistent complaint, with several reviewers calling it unpleasant, and Kayak's own breakdown rates the restaurants far below service and cleanliness. A 2023 review on Petit Futé also criticized the food and shuttle delays. Prices on Kayak ran from $316 to over $1,000 a night for late-October dates. Book Planet Hollywood for a short trip, a first visit or a family that wants entertainment and a quick transfer; skip it if beach quality or food is your top priority.

Our take

This is the resort most guides still call Dreams Las Mareas, and the name matters. In October 2026, Hyatt's Dreams page for it no longer loaded, Google listed the Dreams business as permanently closed, and Kayak was selling the same Playa El Jobo property as JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive. We could not confirm the official rebrand date or how much has changed on the ground, so check Marriott's site before booking. What the listings describe is a large all-inclusive with 444 rooms, eight dining venues including five à la carte restaurants, pools with a water slide and kids' and teens' clubs, on a sheltered bay near the Nicaraguan border. Kayak shows 8.3 of 10 from 495 reviews, many from the Dreams era, praising the facilities, rooms, pools, restaurants and friendly staff; negatives include price, slow or poor service, food quality, the secluded location and plastic washing up on the beach. It is about 1.5 hours from Liberia. Book it if you want space and quiet and are happy to stay put; skip it if you want short transfers or easy day trips.

Our take

Occidental Tamarindo is the only all-inclusive in the Tamarindo area, according to Barceló, and that is its selling point: you get a beachfront all-inclusive on Playa Langosta about 2 km from Tamarindo's restaurants, surf schools and nightlife. The 198-room resort, formerly Barceló Langosta Beach, has three restaurants and a wellness center, and Barceló advertised rates from $195 a night. It is about an hour from Liberia airport. Guest scores are middling, with 3.9 of 5 on the Tripadvisor widget Barceló displays (6,078 reviews) and 7.5 of 10 on Kayak from 1,896 reviews. Recent Tripadvisor reviews shown on Barceló's site praise friendly reception staff, lush grounds, clean rooms and a quiet atmosphere, while one notes that nobody is in a hurry here, which reads as slow service. Barceló says the rooms were renovated in 2010, so expect dated decor. Our take

Barceló Tambor is the cheapest all-inclusive we found in Costa Rica, advertised from $154 a night, and the only one on this list outside Guanacaste. It sits on the calm bay of Playa Tambor on the southern Nicoya Peninsula, 5.6 miles from the Cóbano airstrip and 11 miles from Curú National Park, with 402 rooms including 56 Premium Level rooms and four suites, pools, a golf course and a casino. Barceló says it was refurbished in December 2012, and that shows: the Tripadvisor widget on its site averages 3.8 of 5 from 6,521 reviews. The two most recent reviews it displays sum the place up. One, from August 2026, calls the grounds and pool stunning but the rooms 'another story', with mold; another, from July 2026, likes the location, pools and unlimited buffet but notes older rooms and lukewarm showers. Getting here takes planning, usually a flight to San José and a long drive with a ferry, or a domestic flight. Book Tambor for a budget all-inclusive near Curú National Park's wildlife; skip it if room condition matters to you.

Costa Rica all-inclusive family resorts

For 'Costa Rica all inclusive family resorts', three stand out:

  • Hotel Riu Guanacaste: 24-hour all-inclusive, a free Splash Water World water park with slides and a kids' pool, seven bars, Riu's Fun4All family program and nightly shows. It is the cheapest big family resort here; expect busy buffets.
  • The Westin Reserva Conchal: a kids' club, a very large main pool, golf-cart transport around the grounds and Playa Conchal. Reviewers like it for wildlife spotting, too.
  • Planet Hollywood Costa Rica: a Kids Club, a splash pad, movie-themed entertainment and, according to the resort's FAQ, no minimum age, with taxes and gratuities included in the price.

The former Dreams Las Mareas, now listed as JW Marriott Costa Elena, has a kids' club and a teens' club on its Kayak listing but is the farthest from the airport, which matters with small children. For more options in Mexico and the Caribbean, see our family all-inclusive guide.

Costa Rica all-inclusive resorts for adults only

Two dedicated adults-only all-inclusives operate on the Gulf of Papagayo in 2026:

  • Secrets Papagayo: 202 suites on a jungle hillside, Preferred Club upgrades, and 4.5 of 5 on Tripadvisor from about 6,250 reviews. Our adults-only pick.
  • Occidental Papagayo – Adults Only: formerly Occidental Grand Papagayo, run by Barceló, with 163 rooms per Air Canada Vacations, a buffet plus Italian and Asian à la carte restaurants, and the First Club upgrade. The Tripadvisor widget on Barceló's page shows 4.0 of 5 from 8,636 reviews, and Barceló listed rates from $181 a night. We did not find enough recent reviews to give it a full card.

Couples who want more space can also look at the Westin's adults-only club rooms, listed on Hotels.com. The adults-only Riu Palace Costa Rica is closed until April 2027. Our adults-only guide compares Secrets Papagayo with adults-only resorts elsewhere.

Dry season vs. green season: the best time to go

Guanacaste is Costa Rica's driest region, and the difference between seasons is dramatic. Instituto Meteorológico Nacional data for Liberia show less than a quarter of an inch of rain a month from January to March, and more than 13 inches in September.

  • December to April (dry season): sunny, dusty and hot, with average highs of 92–97°F. Peak prices, especially at Christmas, New Year and Easter.
  • May to November (green season): afternoon storms, green hills and lower rates. There is often a drier spell in July (about 6 inches at Liberia versus nearly 10 in June).
  • September and October: the wettest months. Some tours and roads are affected, but resort prices are at their lowest.

Costa Rica's tourism board actively markets the rainy season; its 'Rainy Season' video below shows what to expect. If you go in green season, book tours for the morning.

Wildlife and day trips from Guanacaste resorts

The reason to choose Costa Rica over Mexico is what you can do off the property. Popular half- and full-day trips from Guanacaste resorts include:

  • Rincón de la Vieja National Park: volcanic hot springs, mud pots, waterfalls and zip-lining at nearby ranches.
  • Palo Verde boat tour: crocodiles and birds on the Tempisque River.
  • Río Celeste: the bright-blue river and waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park.
  • Catamaran sails from Playas del Coco, Flamingo or Tamarindo, with snorkeling (Tripadvisor forum regulars warn that Costa Rica is not known for snorkeling).
  • Diamante Eco Adventure Park, next door to Riu Guanacaste.

The Arenal volcano and La Fortuna area is too far for a comfortable day trip from most of these resorts, so forum regulars often suggest a split stay: four or five nights at the beach plus two or three in La Fortuna.

Getting there, entry rules and safety

  • Airport: Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR), about 11 km (7 mi) west of Liberia, is the gateway for Guanacaste. Barceló Tambor guests usually fly to San José (SJO) or to the small Tambor/Cóbano airstrips.
  • Transfers: Planet Hollywood says it is about 30 minutes from LIR; Barceló puts Occidental Papagayo about 9 miles away; Trip.com says the Westin is about 1 hour 15 minutes; Kayak puts the former Dreams Las Mareas 33 miles (about 1.5 hours) away; and Barceló says Occidental Tamarindo is about an hour.
  • Entry: U.S. citizens need a valid passport.
  • Safety: the U.S. State Department advises increased caution in Costa Rica because of crime. Resort areas are generally calm, but do not leave valuables in rental cars or on beaches.
  • Money: the Costa Rican colón is the currency, but resorts price in U.S. dollars and accept cards.
  • Tipping: Planet Hollywood says taxes and gratuities are included in its package; at other resorts, small tips for bartenders, servers and housekeeping are appreciated.

What a Costa Rica all-inclusive costs, and mistakes to avoid

In October 2026 we saw all-inclusive rates for two from about $316 a night at Planet Hollywood and $490 at the former Dreams Las Mareas on Kayak, with premium rooms above $1,000. Barceló advertised Barceló Tambor from $154 and Occidental Tamarindo from $195 a night. Dry-season and holiday dates cost more.

Mistakes to avoid:

  1. Expecting Caribbean water. Pacific beaches here have darker sand and can be rough; Playa Conchal is the exception.
  2. Booking a closed or renamed resort. Riu Palace Costa Rica reopens in April 2027, and Dreams Las Mareas now trades under a new name.
  3. Underestimating transfers. Some resorts are 1.5 hours from LIR. Book a flight that lands before mid-afternoon.
  4. Skipping the outdoors. Budget $100–$200 per person for at least one volcano, river or wildlife tour.
  5. Ignoring the season. September and October are very wet; December to April is dry but pricey.

What travel-forum regulars say

Travel-forum consensus

On Tripadvisor's Costa Rica and Guanacaste forums, regulars are lukewarm on all-inclusives in general and specific about which ones they like. The Westin Reserva Conchal gets the most praise, mainly for its beach. Opinions on Riu Guanacaste split sharply, from posters who call it a poor choice for Costa Rica to others who loved the resort and Playa Matapalo. Secrets Papagayo, Occidental Papagayo, Occidental Tamarindo and Margaritaville in Playa Flamingo come up as alternatives. The most repeated advice is to remember why you are in Costa Rica: the all-inclusives sit on the dry northwest coast, far from the rainforest, so many posters recommend a split stay with a few nights near La Fortuna and Arenal, or at least booking day trips to Rincón de la Vieja, Palo Verde or Río Celeste. Several also warn that Costa Rica is not known for snorkeling. This summary draws on the three Tripadvisor Costa Rica and Guanacaste forum threads linked below rather than on Reddit, and many forum threads on the topic are several years old.

In a Guanacaste forum thread asking for an all-inclusive recommendation, replies range from calling Riu Guanacaste the worst choice in Costa Rica to praising it and Playa Matapalo, with the Westin's beach singled out as the best.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best all-inclusive resort in Costa Rica?

For most travelers, The Westin Reserva Conchal, because it pairs an all-inclusive plan with Playa Conchal, the best beach of any Costa Rica all-inclusive, plus a kids' club and golf. It scores 9.1 of 10 on Trip.com. Couples should also consider Secrets Papagayo (adults only, 4.5 of 5 on Tripadvisor), and families on a budget Hotel Riu Guanacaste.

Are there adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica?

Yes. Secrets Papagayo, with 202 suites on the Gulf of Papagayo, is our pick, and Occidental Papagayo – Adults Only is a cheaper alternative with 163 rooms. The adults-only Riu Palace Costa Rica is closed for renovation until April 2027, according to Riu.

What happened to Dreams Las Mareas?

In October 2026, Hyatt's Dreams page for the resort no longer loaded, Google listed the Dreams business as permanently closed, and Kayak was selling the same Playa El Jobo property as JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive. We could not confirm the official rebrand date, so check Marriott Bonvoy for current details before booking.

When is the best time to go to a Costa Rica all-inclusive?

December to April, Guanacaste's dry season, brings almost no rain at Liberia and the most reliable beach weather, but the highest prices. May to November is the green season, with afternoon storms and lower rates; July is often drier. September and October are the wettest months, with more than 12 inches of rain each.

Which airport do I fly into for Costa Rica all-inclusives?

Fly into Liberia (LIR) for the Guanacaste resorts. Planet Hollywood is about 30 minutes away, Occidental Papagayo about 9 miles, Occidental Tamarindo about an hour, the Westin about 1 hour 15 minutes, and the former Dreams Las Mareas about 1.5 hours. For Barceló Tambor, fly into San José (SJO) or take a domestic flight.

Is Costa Rica good for an all-inclusive family vacation?

Yes, if your family likes nature. Hotel Riu Guanacaste has a free water park, the Westin has a kids' club and Playa Conchal, and Planet Hollywood has a kids' club with no minimum age. Plan at least one day trip to see monkeys, volcanoes or crocodiles, since that is what makes Costa Rica different from Mexico.

Are Costa Rica beaches as nice as the Caribbean?

Usually not for swimming. Guanacaste beaches tend to have darker sand and rougher, less clear water, and reviewers mention murky water at Secrets Papagayo and an unpleasant beach at Planet Hollywood. Playa Conchal at the Westin is the exception, with crushed-shell sand and clearer water.

Is Costa Rica safe for tourists?

The U.S. State Department advises increased caution in Costa Rica because of crime, mostly petty theft and some violent crime in cities. Resort areas in Guanacaste are generally calm. Do not leave valuables on the beach or in rental cars, use licensed taxis or resort transfers, and book tours through reputable operators.
