Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Resorts (2026): 12 Best by Region

Punta Cana gets most of the flights, but the Dominican Republic has five other resort coasts with different water, weather and prices. We compared the regions side by side and picked 12 all-inclusives, from Casa de Campo's golf courses to Samaná's wild beaches and Puerto Plata's budget resorts, using October 2026 ratings and guest reviews.

Quick answer

  • The best Dominican Republic all-inclusive resorts depend on the coast: Punta Cana for choice and flights, La Romana and Bayahibe for calmer Caribbean water, Miches for new luxury, Samaná for scenery, and Puerto Plata for value.
  • Our top picks: Casa de Campo in La Romana for luxury and golf (Tripadvisor 5.0 as shown on WestJet, 9,664 reviews), Club Med Michès for families (4.7 from 5,569 reviews) and Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana for adults-only.
  • Best value outside Punta Cana: Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada in Puerto Plata, with Kayak's monthly averages at $161 to $328 a night, and Dreams Dominicus on the Caribbean coast for families.
  • Flights: Punta Cana (PUJ) has by far the most US nonstops; Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo also have nonstops from New York, Newark, Miami and Atlanta. Samaná's airport has no US nonstops.
  • The two coasts have opposite rainy seasons: Punta Cana is driest from February to April, while Puerto Plata's wettest months are November and December at about 9 inches each.
  • The U.S. State Department rates the country Level 2 (exercise increased caution) for crime, and every traveler must complete the free e-ticket.

Our verdict

Our verdict: Punta Cana for most people, but the best resort for you may be elsewhere

For a first trip, Punta Cana is still the easiest answer: the most nonstop flights, the most resorts and the shortest transfers. Our full Punta Cana guide ranks 12 resorts there, led by Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana for adults.

Look beyond it if you have a specific goal. Golfers and luxury travelers should book Casa de Campo in La Romana, where three Pete Dye courses sit inside a gated resort beside its own airport. Families who want a polished, activity-packed week should look at Club Med Michès, a newer resort on an empty stretch of the northeast coast. Dreams Dominicus in Bayahibe gives families calmer Caribbean water for mid-range money.

On a budget, the north coast around Puerto Plata is the value play: Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada averages $161 to $328 a night on Kayak. Samaná is for travelers who want scenery and whales more than polish. Wherever you go, check sargassum and rainy-season timing, because the two coasts behave differently.

Picks are based on guest ratings, recent review patterns and official resort information, not hosted stays. Our method.

Dominican Republic all-inclusive resorts by region

The Dominican Republic has two very different resort coasts. The east and north face the open Atlantic: bigger waves, long beaches and more exposure to sargassum seaweed. The south faces the Caribbean: calmer, clearer water and smaller beaches. Our region table below compares all six main areas.

  • Punta Cana, Bávaro and Cap Cana have most of the country's all-inclusive rooms and flights. See our Punta Cana guide.
  • La Romana and Bayahibe are the Caribbean-side alternative, with Casa de Campo, Dreams Dominicus and the boat trips to Saona Island.
  • Miches is the newest resort area, a rural stretch of the northeast where Club Med and Hilton's Zemi have opened resorts.
  • Samaná and Las Terrenas are mountainous and green, with whale watching from January to March.
  • Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete on the north coast are older, cheaper and close to their own airport.
  • Santo Domingo, Juan Dolio and Boca Chica combine the colonial capital with nearby city beaches.

Most US travelers should start with Punta Cana and only switch if a specific region fits their trip better. The sections below explain who each region suits.

Tripadvisor5.0/5 · 9,664

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

Casa de Campo is the Dominican Republic's original resort and still its most complete luxury stay. WestJet Vacations says it opened almost 50 years ago as the country's first resort, and it now covers three Pete Dye golf courses including Teeth of the Dog, a marina, an equestrian and polo center, tennis, pickleball and padel, eight restaurants including the Minitas Beach Club, three private beaches and the cliff-top village of Altos de Chavón. Tripadvisor's rating as shown on WestJet is a top-mark 5.0 from 9,664 reviews, and recent guests rave about the spa, beach and pool-bar staff.

It is a gated resort community rather than a single hotel, so the experience is different from a classic all-inclusive. You get around by golf cart, which is mandatory and not included, and all-inclusive is a room-plan option rather than the default. It sits right next to La Romana's airport, but that airport has only one US route. Book Casa de Campo for golf, a multigenerational trip or a luxury stay with real variety; skip it if you want a walk-to-everything resort at a set price.

Tripadvisor4.7/5 · 5,569

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

Club Med Michès is the resort we would pick for a family that wants a lot to do without chasing reservations. It is the first Club Med Exclusive Collection resort in the Americas and is split into four themed villages: a family area, an all-ages zone and two adults-only areas for couples who want quiet. Kids clubs run from 4 months to 17 years, and Club Med lists 39 included activities, from the circus school that reviewers love to sports and yoga. The resort displays a Tripadvisor rating of 4.7 from 5,569 reviews.

The main caveats are location and dining choice. Miches is rural and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Punta Cana airport, so this is a stay-put resort. Recent guests also note that it has fewer restaurants than a big Punta Cana resort, even if the buffet and restaurant quality are high. Be aware that Club Med's own site shows only recent 4- and 5-star reviews. Book it for a family or multigenerational trip that values activities and service over nightlife and variety.

Our take

If you want the best adults-only all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic and can pay for it, this is our pick. Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana scores 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 9,749 reviews and won a Travelers' Choice Best of the Best award for 2026. It is about 6 miles from Punta Cana airport, the busiest gateway in the country, so it also wins on convenience.

Guests consistently praise the service, the non-self-serve buffet and the pool scene, and they can use restaurants at family-friendly Hyatt Ziva next door. Complaints are about the club upgrade (often called poor value), low-season restaurant closures, some 2026 construction, and seaweed on Juanillo Beach in summer. Kayak's monthly averages run $648 to $1,139 a night, so it is not cheap. Book it for a honeymoon or a high-end couples trip between December and April; read our Punta Cana guide for the cheaper adults-only alternatives nearby.

Guest ratings

Tripadvisor4.5/5 · 13,107

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

Dreams Dominicus is our pick for families who want Caribbean-calm water instead of Punta Cana's Atlantic surf. It has 488 rooms on Dominicus Beach near Bayahibe, the jumping-off point for Saona Island trips, and it holds 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 13,107 reviews as shown on WestJet. The resort follows the Dreams model, with dinner at à la carte restaurants without reservations, according to WestJet Vacations, and recent guests praise golden sand, clear water and an entertainment team that keeps kids and adults busy.

The usual compromises apply. Food is described as hit and miss, many staff speak limited English, and it is a drive of roughly 45 minutes from the airport, per one 2026 guest. In return, guests in October 2026 reported very little seaweed, which is a real advantage in a heavy sargassum year. Book Dreams Dominicus for a family beach trip, especially between May and October; choose Punta Cana instead if you want the widest choice of restaurants and a shorter transfer.

Guest ratings

Tripadvisor4.5/5 · 551

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

Zemi Miches is the resort that put Hilton on the Dominican all-inclusive map outside Punta Cana. As part of the Curio Collection, it earns and redeems Hilton Honors points, and early reviews are excellent: 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 551 reviews as shown on WestJet, with category scores of 4.9 for cleanliness and 4.8 for rooms. Guests single out the staff by name, and one called every aspect of the service a 10 out of 10.

The review sample is still small, so treat the score with some caution. The location is the other big question: Miches is a rural area about 95 km from Bávaro, and even happy guests say they hesitated over the drive. A recent reviewer also described a confused check-in, including being given an adjoining room despite asking not to. Book Zemi Miches if you have Hilton points or want a quieter, newer luxury resort and do not mind a long transfer; stick with Cap Cana if you want certainty and a short ride.

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

Dreams Onyx is the Punta Cana family resort we would compare against everything else on this page. It scores 4.6 on Tripadvisor from 13,968 reviews and 8.8 on Kayak, and it offers about 800 rooms, 11 restaurants, 10 bars, six pools, slides, a lazy river and kids and teen clubs, with adults able to use Breathless next door. Kayak's monthly averages of $320 to $622 a night are roughly half what the Hyatt Ziva family resort in Cap Cana costs.

Its weaknesses are the ones you would expect in Uvero Alto: about 21 miles from the airport, wavier Atlantic water, and seaweed that made the beach unusable for some guests in August and October 2026. Food reviews are mixed. If you want the reliability of Punta Cana's flights with a lot of family entertainment for the money, it is a strong choice; if calm summer water matters more, compare it with Dreams Dominicus on the Caribbean coast.

Tripadvisor4.5/5 · 8,991

Our take

Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo is the easiest way to see Samaná without giving up the all-inclusive comforts. It holds 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 8,991 reviews as shown on WestJet, and recent guests praise how clean the common areas are, the variety at the buffet and à la carte restaurants, a strong animation team and snorkeling right off the beach. Several describe it as compact, with everything within a comfortable walk.

The drive is part of the experience: guests describe a scenic 45-minute ride from the airport, though one noted that parts of the road are rough for a full-size bus. Rooms are the weak point, with reports of cleaning lapses and an air-conditioning leak that was quickly fixed, and one guest found the main pool small for a resort of its size. Book El Portillo for a family or couples trip focused on beaches, snorkeling and whale season; choose Punta Cana if you want newer rooms and more nightlife.

Tripadvisor4.5/5 · 1,713

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

This small adults-only resort, which most guests still know as Bahia Principe Grand Samaná, is for couples who want views and calm more than a big resort scene. It scores 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 1,713 reviews as shown on WestJet, with standout category scores of 4.8 for cleanliness and 4.7 for service. Guests describe a property raised above the coastline with sweeping sea views, spacious rooms and an easy-going, romantic atmosphere.

It is not for food lovers or people who want activities. Reviewers say the dining leans heavily on the buffet, with one guest finding only the buffet open during a five-night stay, and others mention mediocre wine and few beach activities. The transfer is long, about 1 hour 10 minutes from the airport for one July 2026 guest. Time a quiet couples trip here with whale season; for a livelier adults-only option in Samaná, compare Viva V Samaná on Playa Cosón.

Our take

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada is the north-coast resort we would book on a budget. Kayak's monthly averages run just $161 to $328 a night, and it still scores 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 10,239 reviews as shown on WestJet, with 4.5 for both service and cleanliness. It is a 516-room family resort about 10 minutes from Puerto Plata's center, with a main pool in three sections, a children's pool, the Star Camp kids area, three specialty restaurants, a dive center, pickleball courts and a newer spa.

The resort is around 25 years old, and it shows in the rooms: a summer 2026 guest described a persistently musty, damp room, while others said the grounds are very well maintained. It closed from August 30 to October 26, 2026 for pool renovations, so the first post-reopening reviews will show what improved. It suits a family trip where price matters most; pick a newer Punta Cana resort if room quality is your priority.

Our take

Senator Puerto Plata is the most upscale-looking all-inclusive on the north coast: a 567-room resort that WestJet Vacations describes as sitting at the foot of a coral beach with mountain views and lush gardens, with three reservation-only restaurants (Embers, La Grappa and Zao Teppanyaki). Its long-run Tripadvisor rating is 4.5 from 3,718 reviews as shown on WestJet, and a recent group of guests praised the spacious rooms and strong water pressure.

The trouble is recent service. Several October 2026 reviewers gave it one or two stars, describing unhelpful guest services, difficulty getting dinner reservations, inflexible policies and, in one case, a sense that foreign and Dominican guests were treated differently. The sub-scores tell the same story, with service at 4.0 and rooms at 3.9 versus cleanliness at 4.3. We would only book it at a clear discount, with dinner reservations made on arrival; otherwise Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada is the safer north-coast choice.

Our take

Viva Heavens is a small, friendly budget resort for travelers who care more about the beach and the people than the facilities. It holds 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 3,645 reviews as shown on WestJet, Kayak's monthly averages run $202 to $293 a night, and one guest put the airport transfer at about 20 minutes. Repeat guests praise the beach, themed dinners and an entertainment team that several reviewers call the best they have met.

It is honest about being small. A happy October 2026 guest still described it as underwhelming, with one small pool, one bar and a buffet, and another said rooms are clean but dated, with no balcony, hallway light under the door, fiddly locks and no elevators. Loud beach music bothered some. Book Viva Heavens for a cheap, sociable week by the sea; spend a little more at Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada if you want more pools and restaurants.

Our take

Playabachata is one of the most searched Puerto Plata all-inclusives, mostly because it is one of the cheapest: Kayak's 12-month averages run just $117 a night in October to $170 in December. For that you get a beachfront resort with large tropical gardens, six restaurants, five bars, three pools and a nightly entertainment program, according to Kayak's listing.

The reviews are the problem. Kayak guests score it 7.2 out of 10 from 2,474 reviews, well below every other resort on this page, and the complaints repeat: rooms in need of new mattresses and linens, rooms far from the beach, housekeeping gaps, prices not honored and staff pushing VIP membership sales. Some guests do praise the views and entertainment. We include it because so many people search for it, not because we recommend it. If your budget is this tight, we would spend the extra $50 to $100 a night on Viva Heavens or Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada.

Pros & cons

The Dominican Republic for an all-inclusive: why go, why not

Reasons to go

  • Five international airports with service from the US or Canada
  • The widest range of all-inclusive prices in the Caribbean, from about $120 to over $1,100 a night
  • Two different coasts, so you can pick calm Caribbean or wild Atlantic water
  • Strong family resorts with big kids clubs
  • Whale watching, Saona Island, golf and colonial Santo Domingo as excursions
  • Easy entry for US citizens with a free online form

Reasons to think twice

  • Level 2 State Department advisory for crime
  • Sargassum on Atlantic-facing beaches in many springs and summers
  • Long, rural transfers to Miches and Samaná
  • Older resorts on the north coast can feel dated
  • Limited English among staff at some resorts outside Punta Cana

Punta Cana: the default for a reason

Punta Cana International Airport handled about 11 million passengers in 2025, according to Wikipedia, and has nonstops from dozens of US cities. That flight network, plus transfers as short as 15 minutes to Cap Cana, is why most first-timers end up here.

The trade-offs are crowds, very large resorts and sargassum, which hits this Atlantic-facing coast hard in many springs and summers. Our Punta Cana resort rankings cover the six sub-areas in detail, from Cap Cana to Uvero Alto. On this page we include two Punta Cana stand-outs for comparison: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana, our top adults-only pick in the country, and Dreams Onyx, a strong family-value option in Uvero Alto.

La Romana all-inclusive resorts and Bayahibe: calmer water, golf and Saona Island

La Romana and the fishing village of Bayahibe sit on the Caribbean coast, east of Santo Domingo and south-west of Punta Cana. The official Go Dominican Republic site describes Bayahibe as the main gateway to Saona Island, Catalina Island and Cotubanamá National Park, and La Romana as the home of high-end resorts, golf and Altos de Chavón.

Who it suits

  • Golfers and luxury travelers: Casa de Campo has three Pete Dye courses, including Teeth of the Dog, and its own marina.
  • Families who want calm water: Dreams Dominicus and Iberostar Selection Hacienda Dominicus (4.5 from 13,864 Tripadvisor reviews, as shown on WestJet) sit on Dominicus Beach.
  • Snorkelers and divers: reefs and day trips are closer here than from Punta Cana.

Getting there: La Romana's small airport (LRM) sits beside Casa de Campo but, per Wikipedia, its only US airline route is American from Miami. Most travelers fly into Punta Cana and drive; a Dreams Dominicus guest described a 45-minute ride from the airport. Hilton La Romana, which operates separate adults-only and family all-inclusive resorts here, is covered in our Hilton and other brands guide.

Miches and Zemi Miches: the new luxury frontier

Miches is a rural town on the northeast coast that Go Dominican Republic markets as an emerging destination with golden beaches, mountains, lagoons and waterfalls and "nature without the crowds" (Go Dominican Republic). It is about 95 km from Punta Cana and Bávaro by road, according to Wikipedia, and Club Med quotes transfers of about 1 hour 15 minutes from PUJ, 2 hours from La Romana and 3 hours from Santo Domingo.

Two big names define the area:

  • Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, the first Club Med Exclusive Collection resort in the Americas, with four themed villages and adults-only zones.
  • Zemi Miches All-Inclusive Resort, part of Hilton's Curio Collection, which still has only a few hundred Tripadvisor reviews.

Viva Miches by Wyndham (4.0 from 1,127 reviews) is the budget option; guests praise the yoga and beach but warn that few staff speak English and that the area is still very rural. From January to March, whale-watching trips leave from Miches to the Bancos de la Plata sanctuary, per Go Dominican Republic. Expect quiet evenings: there is little to do outside the resorts.

Samaná and Las Terrenas: wild beaches and humpback whales

Samaná is the green, mountainous peninsula on the northeast coast. Go Dominican Republic calls it one of the country's most biodiverse destinations, with a bay that hosts the annual humpback whale migration and Playa Rincón near Las Galeras among its best beaches.

It is harder to reach from the US. Samaná El Catey airport (AZS) has seasonal flights from Montreal and Toronto but no US routes, per Wikipedia, so most Americans connect through Canada or drive from Santo Domingo or Punta Cana. From AZS, Las Terrenas is about 30 minutes away and Las Galeras about an hour.

Resort choice is smaller and dominated by Bahia Principe. Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo is the family pick near Las Terrenas, and Bahia Principe Escape Samaná (formerly Grand Samaná) is adults-only. Viva V Samaná, a Wyndham Trademark adults-only resort with 285 rooms on Playa Cosón, also scores 4.5 from 4,535 Tripadvisor reviews as shown on WestJet, with guests praising value and the beach; WestJet Vacations notes improvement work there in August and October 2026.

Puerto Plata resorts all-inclusive: Playa Dorada, Sosúa and Cabarete

Puerto Plata on the north coast is one of the country's older resort areas and now its value market. Go Dominican Republic highlights the colonial center, the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres and Playa Dorada, the resort strip just east of town.

Why consider it

  • Cheaper rates. Kayak's monthly averages for Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada run $161 to $328 a night, and Viva Heavens $202 to $293, far below comparable Punta Cana resorts.
  • Its own airport. Gregorio Luperón (POP) is about 15 km east of the city and has nonstops on American from Miami, JetBlue from New York-JFK, United from Newark and Delta from Atlanta, with seasonal Charlotte and Boston service, per Wikipedia.
  • Things to do. Sosúa has a lively town beach, and Cabarete is billed by the tourism board as the country's surf and wind city.

What to know

Many resorts here are older. Guests at Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada describe a 25-year-old but well-kept property, and Playabachata reviewers frequently mention dated rooms. Lifestyle Tropical Beach Resort & Spa belongs to the Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Club group, which also runs several suite hotels in Puerto Plata, so ask whether your rate comes with a sales presentation. Rain is also heavier in winter here than in Punta Cana (see the best-time section below).

Santo Domingo all-inclusive resorts: Juan Dolio and Boca Chica

Santo Domingo is the right base if you want history with your beach time. Its Colonial Zone is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Go Dominican Republic also points to Los Tres Ojos National Park and the Malecón seafront.

The all-inclusives are east of the city in Boca Chica and Juan Dolio, near Las Américas International Airport (SDQ). SDQ handled about 5.5 million passengers in 2024 and has nonstops from New York-JFK, Newark, Boston, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Atlanta, according to Wikipedia.

These resorts are generally smaller and simpler than Punta Cana's, and the beaches are busy with local visitors on weekends. We would book a few nights in a Colonial Zone hotel and then move to La Romana, Bayahibe or Punta Cana for the all-inclusive part of the trip, rather than staying all week in Juan Dolio.

Dominican Republic all-inclusive resorts for adults only

The strongest adults-only resorts in the country are in Punta Cana, especially Cap Cana: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana (4.9 on Tripadvisor), Secrets Cap Cana (4.8) and Sanctuary Cap Cana (4.7), plus Excellence Punta Cana in Uvero Alto. Our Punta Cana guide compares them in detail.

Outside Punta Cana, the adults-only choice is thinner but better value:

  • Viva V Samaná on Playa Cosón: 285 rooms, bungalows with plunge pools, 4.5 from 4,535 reviews.
  • Bahia Principe Escape Samaná: a quiet hilltop resort with views; guests like the calm but say the dining is buffet-heavy.
  • Club Med Michès and Casa de Campo are not adults-only, but Club Med has adults-only villages and Casa de Campo's scale makes it easy to avoid families.

For more options across the Caribbean and Mexico, see our adults-only all-inclusive guide.

Dominican Republic all-inclusive family resorts

Families have more good options here than almost anywhere in the Caribbean, because many resorts are large and built around pools and kids clubs.

  • Club Med Michès has Baby, Petit and Mini Club Med programs plus teen clubs, covering ages 4 months to 17 years, and 39 included activities according to Club Med.
  • Dreams Dominicus in Bayahibe gives you calm Caribbean water and a strong entertainment team.
  • Dreams Onyx in Punta Cana's Uvero Alto has slides, a lazy river, 11 restaurants and teen clubs.
  • Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo is a compact, walkable Samaná resort with snorkeling off the beach.
  • Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada in Puerto Plata has a Star Camp kids area, a children's pool and sports courts at budget prices.

Families with very young children should weigh transfer time heavily: Cap Cana and Puerto Plata resorts are 15 to 30 minutes from their airports, while Miches and Samaná can take more than an hour. More picks: our family all-inclusive guide.

Cheap all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic: where value is real

The cheapest Dominican all-inclusives are mostly on the north coast and in older Punta Cana and Bayahibe properties. Kayak's 12-month averages put Playabachata in Puerto Plata at $117 to $170 a night and Viva Heavens at $202 to $293, compared with $630 or more at Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana.

Cheap does not always mean good value. Playabachata scores 7.2 out of 10 on Kayak from 2,474 reviews, with recurring complaints about room condition, cleaning and pressure to buy VIP memberships. We think the sweet spot is one level up: Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada and Viva Heavens in Puerto Plata, Bahia Principe in Samaná, and Dreams Onyx or Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana, where reviews are consistently stronger for modest extra money.

To stretch a budget further, travel in September or October (the cheapest months at most resorts we checked), fly nonstop into the airport nearest your resort, and compare package prices against booking flights and hotel separately. Our cheap all-inclusive guide and deals page track current offers.

Best time to visit: the two coasts have different rainy seasons

The whole country is warm all year, but rain patterns differ by coast. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Punta Cana (Wikipedia) and the 1991 to 2020 airport record for Puerto Plata (Wikipedia) show it clearly:

Month Punta Cana rain (in) Puerto Plata rain (in)
Jan 3.3 6.9
Feb 2.5 5.5
Mar 2.0 5.1
Apr 2.6 4.5
May 5.1 5.1
Jun 3.7 2.0
Jul 3.3 2.8
Aug 4.2 2.8
Sep 5.3 2.6
Oct 4.9 4.3
Nov 5.2 9.1
Dec 3.6 9.1

Punta Cana, La Romana and Miches are best from December to April. Puerto Plata is driest from June to September, the opposite of Punta Cana, and wettest in November and December. Samaná's big draw, whale season, runs January to March. The whole country is in the Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to November 30.

Sargassum by region

Floating sargassum seaweed reached a record of about 40 million metric tons in the Atlantic and Caribbean in May 2026, according to Forbes España's Nautik Magazine. How much reaches your beach depends on which way it faces.

  • Highest exposure: Punta Cana and Bávaro, where guests at several resorts reported unusable beach days from July to October 2026, and Miches, which faces the same open Atlantic.
  • Lower exposure: the Caribbean-facing south coast around Bayahibe and La Romana. A Dreams Dominicus guest in October 2026 reported very little seaweed, though the south coast is not immune; Barahona, farther west, also gets heavy beachings.
  • North coast: Puerto Plata and Samaná also face the Atlantic. Fewer of the 2026 reviews we read mentioned seaweed there, but check forecasts before you go.

Sargassum Monitoring publishes forecasts covering Punta Cana, Bayahibe, Saona, Samaná and Cap Cana several times a week.

Is the Dominican Republic safe? Safety, entry rules and the e-ticket

The U.S. State Department rates the Dominican Republic Level 2: Exercise increased caution because of crime. The advisory, issued June 12, 2025, says violent crime remains a concern despite more police in tourist areas and lists robbery, homicide and sexual assault. It advises visitors not to display wealth, not to leave drinks unattended, and to contact 911 or the tourist police (POLITUR) when needed (travel.state.gov).

For entry, US citizens need no visa for tourism. Per Go Dominican Republic, an exceptional rule from December 1, 2024 to December 31, 2026 lets US tourists enter with a passport valid for the length of the stay, rather than the usual six months. Every passenger must also complete the free e-ticket at eticket.migracion.gob.do for both arrival and departure; it can be done months ahead, one person can add up to six family members, and the $20 departure tax is already in your airfare.

Most resort stays are trouble-free. Use licensed transfers and resort-booked excursions, keep valuables in the safe, and treat rural night driving in Miches and Samaná with care.

Flights and airports for each region

Choosing the right airport can save hours of driving.

Nonstop flights from New York to Punta Cana take about 3.3 to 4.3 hours according to Trip.com's schedule data. Book transfers before you land, especially for Miches and Samaná, where taxis are scarce and roads are long.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

A few changes worth knowing before you book:

  • Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada in Puerto Plata closed from August 30 to October 26, 2026 for pool renovations, per WestJet Vacations. Reopening reviews will tell you whether the musty-room complaints were fixed.
  • Bahia Principe renamed several resorts: guests now call the adults-only Grand Samaná the Bahia Principe Escape Samaná.
  • Viva V Samaná scheduled improvement work in parts of the resort in August and October 2026.
  • Miches keeps growing, with ProMiches launching a whale-watching protection program in 2025, per Go Dominican Republic.
  • In Punta Cana, Royalton Bávaro and Sanctuary Cap Cana moved under Marriott brands and several resorts are mid-renovation; see our Punta Cana guide for details.

What travel-forum regulars say

Travel-forum consensus

This summary draws on the active Tripadvisor Punta Cana forum, which covers the whole country's entry rules, and on recent guest reviews for each region. Forum regulars repeat a few points: fill in the free e-ticket early and expect airlines to check it; trust detailed mixed reviews over gushing ones; and remember that agency 'from' prices change with room type and view. Guests outside Punta Cana consistently say the scenery and calmer atmosphere are worth the longer drive, especially in Samaná and Miches, but warn that English is less widely spoken and that facilities at older north-coast resorts are dated. Guests on the Caribbean side around Bayahibe reported much less seaweed in 2026 than those in Punta Cana.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area for an all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic?

For most first-timers, Punta Cana: it has the most nonstop flights from the US, the biggest choice of resorts and transfers as short as 15 minutes. Choose La Romana or Bayahibe for calmer Caribbean water and golf, Miches for newer secluded luxury, Samaná for scenery and whales, and Puerto Plata if price matters most.

What is the best all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic?

It depends on the trip. For adults, we rank Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana first (4.9 on Tripadvisor from 9,749 reviews). For luxury and golf, Casa de Campo in La Romana. For families, Club Med Michès, with kids clubs from 4 months to 17 years and adults-only villages. On a budget, Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada in Puerto Plata.

Which Dominican Republic all-inclusive resorts are adults only?

The best adults-only resorts are in Punta Cana: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana, Secrets Cap Cana, Sanctuary Cap Cana and Excellence Punta Cana. In Samaná, Viva V Samaná and Bahia Principe Escape Samaná are adults-only and cheaper. Club Med Michès is not adults-only but has two adults-only villages.

Are Puerto Plata all-inclusive resorts good?

They are good value but older. Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada scores 4.5 on Tripadvisor with Kayak averages of $161 to $328 a night, and Viva Heavens is a friendly small budget option. Rooms are often dated, and Puerto Plata is rainiest in November and December, so it is best from June to September. Some cheap resorts, like Playabachata, have weak reviews.

What is the cheapest all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic?

Among the resorts we checked, Playabachata in Puerto Plata was cheapest, with Kayak 12-month averages of $117 to $170 a night, but it scores only 7.2 out of 10 on Kayak. We think Viva Heavens ($202 to $293) and Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada ($161 to $328) are better value. September and October are the cheapest months at most resorts.

Is the Dominican Republic safe for an all-inclusive vacation?

The U.S. State Department rates the country Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of crime, and most resort stays are uneventful. Use licensed transfers and resort-booked excursions, do not display valuables, never leave drinks unattended and contact POLITUR, the tourist police, if you need help.

Do I need a passport and the e-ticket to visit the Dominican Republic?

Yes. US citizens need a passport; under a measure in force until December 31, 2026, it only has to be valid for the length of a tourist stay. Every traveler must also complete the free e-ticket at eticket.migracion.gob.do for arrival and departure. You can fill it in months ahead and add up to six family members.

When is the best time to go to the Dominican Republic?

December to April is best for Punta Cana, La Romana and Miches, with the least rain and the lowest seaweed risk. Puerto Plata is the exception: its driest months are June to September and its wettest are November and December. Whale season in Samaná runs January to March, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.
