Best Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resorts (2026): 12 We'd Book, Playa to Akumal

The Riviera Maya is the 80-mile stretch of Caribbean coast between Cancun airport and Tulum, and it has more good all-inclusives than anywhere else in Mexico. We compared its six resort areas and picked the 12 resorts we would book, from $230-a-night family deals near Xcaret to Michelin-starred luxury in Playa del Carmen.

Quick answer

  • The best Riviera Maya all inclusive resorts for most travelers: Grand Velas Riviera Maya for luxury (Tripadvisor 4.8/5 from 7,004 reviews), Secrets Maroma Beach for an adults-only beach week (4.8/5 from 26,023), and Hotel Xcaret Mexico for families who want parks included.
  • Best value adults-only: Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya (Kayak 9.3/10 from 770 ratings), with average nightly rates from about $378 in August to $662 in February.
  • Cheapest good family base: Occidental at Xcaret Destination, next to Xcaret park, averaging $230 to $430 a night on Kayak.
  • Where to stay: Puerto Morelos and Playa Maroma for short transfers and calm beaches, Playa del Carmen for a walkable town, Akumal for sea turtles. Most resorts are 30 to 75 minutes from Cancun airport.
  • Sargassum: 2026 was the worst year on record and Playa del Carmen reported the largest volumes. January to April is the safest window; book May to August only with a backup plan.
  • Budget for Visitax (about MX$293 per foreign visitor in 2026) and tips; transfers are included only at the Xcaret hotels.

Our verdict

Our verdict: pick your area first, then your resort

The Riviera Maya rewards travelers who choose the right stretch of coast. If you want a classic beach week, book Secrets Maroma Beach: Playa Maroma is one of the best beaches on the coast, it is about 30 minutes from the airport, and it averages 4.8/5 from more than 26,000 Tripadvisor reviews. If money is no object and food matters, Grand Velas Riviera Maya is the best resort here, with a Michelin-starred restaurant and real family programs. For families who will actually use the parks, Hotel Xcaret Mexico includes them in the rate, and adults who want the same deal should look at Hotel Xcaret Arte.

On a budget, Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya is the adults-only value pick and Occidental at Xcaret Destination is the cheapest family base we would trust. Snorkelers should head south to Secrets Akumal for the sea turtles. These picks are based on Tripadvisor and Kayak review patterns read in October 2026, official resort facts and published rates; we did not stay at the resorts for this guide.

Picks are based on guest ratings, recent review patterns and official resort information, not hosted stays. Our method.

Where to stay in the Riviera Maya: the six resort areas compared

The Riviera Maya runs south from Puerto Morelos, about 20 minutes from Cancun airport, to Tulum. Resorts are strung along Highway 307, and the area you pick decides your beach, your transfer time and whether you can walk anywhere.

Area Transfer from CUN Beach Best for Our picks
Puerto Morelos 20–30 min Calm, reef-protected, seaweed-prone Short transfers, couples Dreams Sapphire
Playa Maroma & Punta Maroma 30–40 min Wide, soft, among the best on the coast Beach-first couples Secrets Maroma Beach, Valentin Imperial, Iberostar Paraíso Lindo
Playa del Carmen & Playacar 45–60 min Busy town beaches, heavy 2026 sargassum Walking to restaurants and 5th Avenue Grand Velas Riviera Maya
Xcaret 50–60 min Rocky coves and river pools Parks, families, activities Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Hotel Xcaret Arte, Occidental at Xcaret
Puerto Aventuras & Xpu-Ha 60–75 min Sheltered bays, quieter Quiet adults-only TRS Yucatán, UNICO 20°87°
Akumal 70–80 min Shallow bays with sea turtles Snorkelers, families Secrets Akumal, Grand Sirenis

If you want to swim and lie on sand every day, start with Playa Maroma. If you want to walk out to dinner, pick Playa del Carmen. If you want activities more than beach, Xcaret. Akumal and Puerto Aventuras are closer to Tulum's ruins and the cenotes, and to Tulum's newer airport (TQO), which Kayak lists about 27 to 31 miles from the Akumal and Xpu-Ha resorts. For the full Tulum picture, see our Tulum guide; for the Hotel Zone, our Cancun guide.

Our take

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is the best all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya, and it is the one we would book for a milestone trip. Tripadvisor rates it 4.8/5 from 7,004 reviews and ranks it #2 of 310 hotels in Playa del Carmen, with a 2026 Best of the Best badge. The official site lists AAA Five Diamond status and a Michelin star for Cocina de Autor, and food is the thing reviewers praise most. Its three sections each have their own feel: Ambassador on the beach for families, Zen Grand in the jungle, and Grand Class, the top-tier oceanfront section. Kayak reviewers mention the teens' club and how valued the staff make them feel.

It is not perfect. The beach is narrower and less swimmable than Playa Maroma's and picks up seaweed in summer; a 2025 Tripadvisor reviewer said it "just isn't all that great." Some August 2026 reviews flagged slipping housekeeping. And it is expensive: Kayak's average nightly rate never dropped below about $977 in the past year. Book it for the food, suites and service, not the sand.

Our take

Secrets Maroma Beach is our top all-round adults-only pick in the Riviera Maya, because it sits on one of the best beaches in Mexico at a mid-luxury price. Tripadvisor rates it 4.8/5 from 26,023 reviews with a 2026 Best of the Best badge, and Kayak users give it 9.2/10, with a perfect 10 for service in Kayak's category scores. Playa Maroma is wide, soft and usually calm, and it is only about 30 minutes from Cancun airport.

Kayak's AI summary of guest reviews matches what we read on Tripadvisor: exceptional staff and clean rooms, with complaints about construction, pushy sales tactics and occasional beach cleanliness problems, and "seaweed" is one of the most-mentioned topics. An August 2026 Tripadvisor reviewer docked a star for the vacation-club pitch, and the main pool has a rough bottom. Go in late August for rates near $480 a night, or in February at more than double that.

Our take

Hotel Xcaret México is the family all-inclusive we would book in the Riviera Maya if the kids are old enough to enjoy the parks. The All-Fun Inclusive rate covers unlimited entry to Grupo Xcaret's parks, transport to them, round-trip airport transfers and ferry tickets to Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. For a family that would otherwise buy several days of park tickets, that changes the maths completely. It has about 900 suites, a AAA Five Diamond award listed on the official site, and strong scores: 4.6/5 from 16,440 Tripadvisor reviews and 9.0/10 from 2,151 Kayak ratings.

The weakness is service at scale. Kayak's review summary says guests frequently describe service as disorganized and mention difficulty getting restaurant reservations, and an August 2026 Tripadvisor reviewer said it is no longer the hotel they fell in love with. There is no classic sandy beach, and Kayak's average rates topped $1,400 a night in July. Book it if you will spend at least three days in the parks.

Our take

Hotel Xcaret Arte takes the Xcaret formula and makes it adults-only (ages 16 and up), with an art theme, workshops and some of the best food on the coast. Like its family sister, the rate includes the Grupo Xcaret parks, transport, airport transfers and ferry tickets. Reviewers rate it highly on both sites: 4.7/5 from 6,926 Tripadvisor reviews and 9.1/10 from 1,004 Kayak ratings, with Kayak's summary praising the location, restaurants and amenities.

Service is the weak spot. Kayak's category score for service is strikingly low compared with its other scores, its summary says guests reported problems at reception and with certain staff, and a June 2026 Tripadvisor reviewer called the service consistently poor. With about 900 suites, it is a big resort, and it sits on rocky coves rather than a sandy beach. Choose it for a week of cenotes, parks and dinners without kids; Secrets Maroma is the better call if you want a beach chair.

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

Secrets Akumal is the adults-only resort we would book for snorkeling. It sits on the Akumal coast, close to the shallow bays where green sea turtles feed, and "sea turtles" is one of the most common topics in its Kayak reviews alongside great food, staff and beach. Kayak users rate it 9.4/10 from 764 ratings, the highest score of any resort on this page, and it has 434 rooms, a full spa and swim-up bars.

The main drawback is distance: it is roughly 75 minutes from Cancun airport, so it suits a week, not a long weekend; Tulum's airport is a closer alternative at about 27 miles, according to Kayak. Older reviews mention that dinner reservations can be hard to get and that the nightclub music disappointed. Prices swing widely, from about $490 a night on Kayak's August average to $1,119 in February. If you want turtles, quiet and a Secrets-style experience without Maroma's crowds, it is excellent.

Our take

Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya is the adults-only all-inclusive that punches furthest above its price. Kayak users rate it 9.3/10 from 770 ratings, with a perfect 10 for service and 9.5 for restaurants and location, and Tripadvisor rates it 4.6/5 from 19,957 reviews. Its average nightly rates on Kayak run from about $378 in August to $662 in February, well below Secrets Maroma at the same times of year. The official site lists seven restaurants with no reservations required, 11 bars, 24-hour room service and one of the largest pools in the region, and it sits on the beach at Playa del Secreto about 19 miles from Cancun airport.

The pool area is where reviews turn mixed: Kayak scores it only 5/10 and reviewers mention noise, music bass you can hear from rooms, and a scramble for loungers. Some also note upselling and food that varies day to day. For a sociable, good-value couples' week with excellent service, we would happily book it.

Kayak8.7/10 · 388

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

TRS Yucatán is the adults-only section of the huge Grand Palladium complex between Playa del Carmen and Akumal, and it is the cheapest way we found to get 24-hour butler service in the Riviera Maya. According to Palladium's official site it has 454 suites, its own à la carte restaurants and beach bar for TRS guests only, and access to more than 35 restaurants and bars across the complex's four hotels. Kayak users rate it 8.7/10 from 388 ratings, with 9.5 for service, and its review summary singles out the butler team.

What holds it back: some reviewers report service inconsistency, uneven food and logistical hassles on a property this large, and the shared areas of the complex can be busy with families. Kayak's average rates ran from about $361 a night in October to $603 in February, which is a lot of butler for the money. It's the choice for privacy and service with the option of a big resort's variety.

Our take

UNICO 20°87° is the pick for adults who want a contemporary design hotel rather than a classic mega-resort. It is strictly 18 and over, and its official site promises unlimited dining at five signature restaurants, premium drinks and cocktails, 24-hour room service, a fully stocked minibar and a dedicated Local Host for each stay. Kayak users rate it 8.8/10 from 373 ratings, with 9.5 for service, and reviewers often name individual staff members.

It is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Cancun airport, according to the hotel, so it is not a short-break resort. Kayak's review summary also mentions aggressive sales pitches, occasional noise and minor maintenance issues, and "loud music" is one of its most-mentioned topics. Rates averaged $480 to $747 a night on Kayak over the past year. It's for couples who care about design and service more than a big beach.

Our take

Occidental at Xcaret Destination, the former Occidental Grand Xcaret, is the cheapest Riviera Maya all-inclusive we would book for a family. Barceló's official site lists 765 rooms and suites set in jungle gardens with river channels, seven pools, 11 restaurants and a private cove, right next to Xcaret park. Kayak's average nightly rates ran from about $230 in September to $430 in December, a fraction of Hotel Xcaret next door, and Kayak users rate it 8.1/10 from 2,263 ratings. Reviewers love the wildlife on the grounds; "iguanas monkeys" is one of Kayak's most-mentioned topics.

It is a value resort, and it shows. Kayak reviews range from guests on their fifth happy visit to complaints about noisy rooms and weak buffet food, and "poor customer service" also appears among the common topics. The beach is a small cove. Park entry is not included unless you buy the optional Unlimited Xcaret Xperience package. It suits a budget family week with a park day or two.

Our take

Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya is a big, fun family resort on the Akumal coast, about 25 minutes from Playa del Carmen according to the resort. Its official site describes three large pools, a lazy river, a Sirenios Kids Club and a teens' club, a 2,800-square-meter spa and a new Beyond Flavors dining concept with restaurants from seafood grill to Italian and fine dining. Tripadvisor rates it 4.3/5 and ranks it #5 of 16 hotels in Akumal, and Trip.com guests give it 8.2/10.

Recent Tripadvisor reviews from August 2026 praise the pools, beach area, friendly staff and food, and a couple single out individual chefs and waiters. The warnings: one guest was pressed to attend a membership sales meeting (the resort has a members-only beach club), and coatis will raid unattended pool bags. It is also roughly an hour from Cancun airport. It makes a lively, good-value family base near the turtles of Akumal.

Tripadvisor4.4/5 · 15,913

Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.

Our take

Dreams Sapphire is the Riviera Maya resort to consider if you want to be at the pool within half an hour of landing. It sits in Puerto Morelos, the closest Riviera Maya town to Cancun airport, and it welcomes families as well as couples. Tripadvisor rates it 4.4/5 from roughly 15,900 reviews and ranks it #19 of 44 hotels in Puerto Morelos; its best category score is service (4.6), and reviewers consistently praise the staff and the lively atmosphere.

The review pattern also shows the trade-offs. Some guests find the decor dated and the resort noisy, and others feel value is lacking because of extra charges. Puerto Morelos beaches are also vulnerable to sargassum: one 2025 reviewer said the beach was unusable in June. We would book it for a fall or winter trip when a short transfer and a buzzy atmosphere matter more than a showpiece beach, and compare prices with Secrets Maroma for adults-only stays.

Our take

Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo is part of the Iberostar Playa Paraíso complex, a cluster of resorts on a wide beach between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, about 20 miles from the airport according to Kayak. We like it as a mid-priced family resort with a real beach: Kayak's average rates ran from about $266 a night in September to $594 in February, and Tripadvisor rates it 4.4/5 from 9,618 reviews.

Kayak's review summary is a fair picture: guests praise the amenities, family-friendly activities, attentive service and breakfast, but some find the rooms small, restaurant reservations difficult and the food inconsistent. Its Kayak score (7.8/10 from 109 ratings) is the lowest of our picks, so this is a value choice rather than a luxury one. Book it if you want a good beach, lots for kids to do and a price well under Hotel Xcaret's.

Pros & cons

The Riviera Maya: why go, why not

Reasons to go

  • Calm, warm, reef-protected Caribbean water at most resorts
  • The widest choice of adults-only and family all-inclusives in Mexico
  • Cenotes, Maya ruins, turtles and Cozumel within an easy day trip
  • Short, cheap nonstop flights from most US hubs into Cancun
  • Big seasonal price swings mean real deals from August to October

Reasons to think twice

  • Record sargassum in 2026, worst around Playa del Carmen
  • Long transfers to Akumal and Puerto Aventuras
  • Vacation-club sales pitches at many large resorts
  • Hurricane and heavy-rain risk from September to November
  • Visitax and transfer costs on top of the room rate

Best all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is the only real town on the Riviera Maya, and staying in or near it means you can walk or take a short taxi to 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida), the Cozumel ferry and hundreds of restaurants. The trade-off is the beach: the town beaches are busy, and Playa del Carmen reported the largest sargassum volumes in Quintana Roo in 2026, according to Mexico News Daily.

The all-inclusive resorts that call Playa del Carmen home are really in four zones:

  • Playacar, the gated resort district just south of town, walkable to 5th Avenue.
  • North of town (Punta Esmeralda to Playa del Secreto), home to Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Paradisus and the Mayakoba resorts.
  • Playa Maroma and Playa Paraíso, 15 to 25 minutes north, home to Secrets Maroma Beach, Valentin Imperial and the Iberostar Paraíso complex.
  • Xcaret, 10 minutes south, with the Xcaret hotels.

On Tripadvisor's Playa del Carmen rankings in October 2026, the highest-rated large all-inclusives were Grand Velas Riviera Maya (4.8/5), Secrets Maroma Beach (4.8/5), Hotel Xcaret Arte (4.7/5), Paradisus La Perla (4.7/5, adults-only) and Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya (4.6/5 from 19,957 reviews). Newer entries worth a look include Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya for families (4.6/5) and Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen, from Hyatt's new adults-only brand (4.6/5).

Xcaret all-inclusive resorts explained: Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Xcaret Arte and Occidental at Xcaret

Three resorts share the Xcaret name and people mix them up constantly. Here is the difference.

  • Hotel Xcaret Mexico (all ages) and Hotel Xcaret Arte (adults and teens 16+) are Grupo Xcaret's own hotels. Their All-Fun Inclusive rate covers unlimited access to the group's parks, including Xcaret, Xel-Há, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xenses, Xoxi and Xenotes, plus transport to the parks, round-trip airport transfers and Xcaret Xailing ferry tickets to Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, according to the official site. Each has about 900 suites. Grupo Xcaret also runs La Casa de la Playa, a small adults-only boutique hotel.
  • Occidental at Xcaret Destination (formerly Occidental Grand Xcaret) is a Barceló-run resort next to Xcaret park with 765 rooms, 11 restaurants and seven pools, according to Barceló. Park entry is not included in the standard rate; Barceló sells an optional Unlimited Xcaret Xperience package instead.

Is the Xcaret all-inclusive worth it?

At Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Tripadvisor's average standard-room rates in October 2026 ran from about $936 to $1,560 a night. That only makes sense if you will use the parks. Our rule of thumb: if your group would visit three or more parks in a week, Hotel Xcaret is good value; if you would visit one, book Occidental at Xcaret and buy a park ticket.

Luxury all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya (and the Mayakoba question)

The Riviera Maya's best-known luxury names are the Mayakoba resorts north of Playa del Carmen: Rosewood, Fairmont, Banyan Tree and Alila. They are not traditional all-inclusives. Fairmont Mayakoba sells an optional all-inclusive package covering unlimited dining and drinks at select restaurants and bars, according to its official offers page, but you will still pay for some venues and extras. If you want luxury where everything is genuinely included, these are the resorts to compare:

  • Grand Velas Riviera Maya: AAA Five Diamond, a Michelin-starred Cocina de Autor and family, jungle and adults-focused sections. Our top pick.
  • Hotel Xcaret Arte: adults-only luxury with the parks included.
  • TRS Yucatán: adults-only with 24-hour butler service in all 454 suites and access to the larger Grand Palladium complex, at a fraction of Grand Velas prices.
  • UNICO 20°87°: an adults-only (18+) design hotel with a Local Host for each stay and premium drinks.
  • Palmaïa, The House of AïA: a wellness-focused all-inclusive north of Playa del Carmen that rated 4.9/5 on Tripadvisor in October 2026.

Our luxury all-inclusive guide compares these with the top resorts in the Caribbean.

Adults-only all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya has more good adults-only all-inclusives than any other region in Mexico. Here is how our picks differ:

Resort Area Why book Watch out for
Secrets Maroma Beach Playa Maroma Best beach Vacation-club pitch
Secrets Akumal Akumal Sea turtles, quieter Long transfer
Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya Playa del Secreto Value, service Pool noise, loungers
TRS Yucatán Grand Palladium, Kantenah Butlers, big complex Busy shared areas
UNICO 20°87° Puerto Aventuras Design, premium drinks Sales pitches
Hotel Xcaret Arte (16+) Xcaret Parks included Rocky shore

For couples who want sand above all, Secrets Maroma Beach. For the lowest price with high scores, Valentin Imperial, which Kayak users rate 9.3/10. For honeymooners who want privacy and service, TRS Yucatán. More options across Mexico and the Caribbean are in our adults-only guide and couples and honeymoon guide.

Best time to visit the Riviera Maya

January to April is the best time for a Riviera Maya all-inclusive. Playa del Carmen's average highs run 82 to 87 °F, rainfall is low (about 1.1 in in March, per Servicio Meteorológico Nacional normals), and sargassum is usually at its lowest. December is just as pleasant but the holidays are the most expensive weeks of the year.

  • May to August: hot (highs around 89 to 91 °F) and the peak of sargassum season. In 2026, Quintana Roo removed 124,852 tonnes of seaweed between April and August, the most on record.
  • September to November: the wettest and cheapest months. October averages about 11 in of rain in Playa del Carmen, and the Atlantic hurricane season peaks around September 10, per NOAA. Kayak's data shows the cheapest months at several of our picks fall in August, September and October.
  • Late 2026 outlook: Quintana Roo's sargassum monitoring network expected minimal wash-ups in November and December 2026, but warned that the 2027 season could start as early as January.

What a Riviera Maya all-inclusive really costs

Nightly rates for two at our 12 picks ranged from about $230 (Occidental at Xcaret in September) to about $1,560 (Hotel Xcaret Mexico at peak), based on Kayak's 12-month average nightly rates and Tripadvisor's average standard-room rates seen in October 2026. Prices roughly double between the cheapest and most expensive months: Secrets Maroma Beach averaged $480 a night in August and $1,258 in February on Kayak.

Extras to budget for

  • Visitax: Quintana Roo's tourist fee, about MX$293 (roughly $16) per foreign visitor in 2026, children included. Pay it on the official Visitax portal; a Tripadvisor forum thread from October 2026 warns about kiosks at Cancun's Terminal 2 charging close to double.
  • Transfers: included only at the two Xcaret hotels. Pre-book a private transfer rather than negotiating at the airport.
  • Tips: cash, ideally pesos, handed out daily. We budget $20 to $50 a day for two.
  • Excursions: cenotes, Tulum ruins, Chichén Itzá and Cozumel snorkeling trips run from about $60 to $200 per person.
  • Membership pitches: Secrets, UNICO and Grand Sirenis reviewers all mention sales pressure for vacation clubs. Saying no costs nothing.

Getting there and staying safe

Flights: nearly everyone flies into Cancun (CUN), with nonstops of about 4 hours from New York and Chicago and 2.5 hours from Dallas or Houston. Tulum's international airport (TQO) is worth checking if you are staying in Akumal or Puerto Aventuras.

Transfers: take a pre-booked private van or your resort's shuttle. Puerto Morelos is about 20 minutes away, Playa Maroma 30 to 40, Playa del Carmen and Xcaret 45 to 60, and Akumal about 75. UNICO 20°87° puts its own transfer at about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Safety: Quintana Roo is at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, in the U.S. State Department's advisory reissued on May 29, 2026, the same level as Mexico overall. The advisory asks U.S. citizens not to drive between cities after dark and to use regulated taxi stands or apps rather than hailing cabs. In practice that means sticking to resort transport at night and being careful in Playa del Carmen's late-night bar district. See our Mexico guide for the state-by-state picture.

Cenotes, ruins and day trips from your resort

One reason to choose the Riviera Maya over Cancun is what is nearby. From most resorts you can reach:

  • Cenotes: freshwater sinkholes for swimming and snorkeling, many along the road inland from Puerto Morelos and around Tulum. Grupo Xcaret's Xenotes tour is included at the Xcaret hotels.
  • Akumal Bay: snorkel with green sea turtles in shallow water; go early and follow the rules on guided access.
  • Tulum ruins: the cliff-top Maya site, about 30 minutes from Akumal.
  • Cozumel: a 45-minute ferry from Playa del Carmen for reef snorkeling (ferry tickets are included at the Xcaret hotels).
  • Chichén Itzá: a long day trip of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way.

If you plan several of these, stay in Playa del Carmen or farther south to cut driving time.

Mistakes to avoid when booking the Riviera Maya

  • Booking Xcaret for the beach. The Xcaret hotels have coves and river pools, not long sandy beaches.
  • Underestimating Akumal transfers. Allow about 75 minutes from Cancun airport, more at rush hour.
  • Ignoring seaweed in summer. Ask the resort about barriers and daily beach cleaning, and check recent guest photos.
  • Assuming a Mayakoba resort is all-inclusive. Check whether your rate is a package and which restaurants it covers.
  • Forgetting Visitax. Pay online before you fly home.
  • Skipping the restaurant reservations. At the busiest resorts, book à la carte dinners on day one.

What travel-forum regulars say

Travel-forum consensus

Riviera Maya trips run through Cancun airport, so the Cancun forum regulars on Tripadvisor are the best guide to the practical side, and in September and October 2026 they repeated the same advice. Pay Visitax online: a thread from October 5, 2026 cited the official portal's MX$293 rate and shared media reports of Terminal 2 kiosks charging nearly double. Tip in cash, daily: the consensus in a 29-reply tipping thread was pesos rather than gifts. Calm water elsewhere when the weather turns: when a September storm threatened Cabo, forum members steered travelers toward Isla Mujeres and the Mexican Caribbean for clear water. Resort-level reviews add one more pattern: at Secrets, UNICO and Grand Sirenis, guests consistently mention membership sales pitches.

Cancun forum regulars shared reports of Visitax kiosks at Terminal 2 charging nearly double the official rate and told visitors to pay the MX$293 fee online in advance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best all-inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya?

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is our overall pick: Tripadvisor 4.8/5 from 7,004 reviews, a Michelin-starred restaurant and three distinct sections for families and couples. For adults who care most about the beach, Secrets Maroma Beach is better and cheaper, with a 4.8/5 average from more than 26,000 reviews. For value, Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya scores 9.3/10 on Kayak at average rates from about $378 a night.

Is Playa del Carmen or Cancun better for an all-inclusive?

Cancun is better for short transfers, nightlife and big-resort choice. Playa del Carmen and the wider Riviera Maya are better for a walkable town, quieter beaches like Playa Maroma, and day trips to cenotes, Tulum and Cozumel. The catch is transfer time: 45 to 60 minutes to Playa del Carmen versus 15 to 30 to Cancun's Hotel Zone. Note that Playa del Carmen had the heaviest sargassum in 2026.

Which Riviera Maya all-inclusive resorts are adults only?

Our adults-only picks are Secrets Maroma Beach (best beach), Secrets Akumal (turtles), Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya (value), TRS Yucatán (butler service), UNICO 20°87° (18+, design) and Hotel Xcaret Arte (16+, parks included). Other well-rated options include Paradisus La Perla in Playa del Carmen, which Tripadvisor rated 4.7/5 in October 2026.

Does Hotel Xcaret include the parks?

Yes. Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Xcaret Arte include unlimited access to Grupo Xcaret's parks, including Xcaret, Xel-Há, Xplor, Xenses and Xenotes, plus transport to them, round-trip airport transfers and ferry tickets to Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. Occidental at Xcaret Destination, next door, does not include park entry in its standard rate but sells an optional Unlimited Xcaret Xperience package.

Is Occidental Grand Xcaret the same as Hotel Xcaret?

No. Occidental at Xcaret Destination, formerly Occidental Grand Xcaret, is a separate Barceló-run resort with 765 rooms next to Xcaret park. It is much cheaper, with Kayak averages of about $230 to $430 a night, but park entry is not included as standard. Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Xcaret Arte are Grupo Xcaret's own hotels, where the parks are part of the rate.

When is sargassum season in the Riviera Maya?

Usually April or May through August, tapering in September and October. 2026 was the worst year on record, with 124,852 tonnes removed in Quintana Roo from April to August, and Playa del Carmen reported the largest volumes. Officials expected minimal wash-ups in November and December 2026 but warned the 2027 season could start in January. Playa Maroma and resorts with offshore barriers usually fare better.

How far are Riviera Maya resorts from Cancun airport?

About 20 minutes to Puerto Morelos, 30 to 40 minutes to Playa Maroma and Playa del Secreto, 45 to 60 minutes to Playa del Carmen and Xcaret, and roughly 75 minutes to Akumal and Puerto Aventuras. If you are staying in Akumal or farther south, compare flights into Tulum's airport (TQO), which Kayak lists about 27 to 31 miles from resorts like Secrets Akumal and TRS Yucatán.

Which Riviera Maya all-inclusive is best for families?

Hotel Xcaret Mexico if you will use the parks, which are included. Grand Velas Riviera Maya for luxury with real kids' and teens' clubs. Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo for a mid-priced resort on a wide beach, Grand Sirenis for a lively budget base with a lazy river, and Occidental at Xcaret Destination for the lowest prices, from about $230 a night.

Are the Mayakoba resorts all-inclusive?

Not in the traditional sense. Rosewood, Banyan Tree and Alila Mayakoba are sold mainly as luxury hotels, and Fairmont Mayakoba offers an optional all-inclusive package that covers unlimited dining and drinks at select restaurants and bars. If you want everything included, compare Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Hotel Xcaret Arte or TRS Yucatán instead.
