Quick answer
- The best Cozumel all-inclusive resort is Cozumel Palace (9.1/10 on Kayak, 169 suites, walkable to downtown San Miguel), but it has dock entry rather than a sandy beach.
- Best for divers and families: Iberostar Waves Cozumel (8.4/10), on the beach about 2.5 miles from Palancar Reef. Best value: Allegro Cozumel and Occidental Cozumel, with Kayak averages from about $170–$180 a night in September.
- Best for snorkeling plus town: Grand Park Royal Cozumel, 1.8 miles from downtown with exclusive access to Paradise Reef from its beach club.
- Adults-only choice is thin: Secrets Aura Cozumel has a good beach but scores only 6.8/10 on Kayak; couples who want polish may do better on the mainland.
- Get there by flying direct to Cozumel (CZM) from cities such as Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Miami or Chicago, or fly to Cancun, drive about 70 km to Playa del Carmen and take the passenger ferry.
- The west coast, where the resorts are, rarely gets sargassum; the wild east coast takes the brunt. Best months are December to April.
Our verdict
Our verdict: where we'd stay on Cozumel
For most couples and families, we'd book Cozumel Palace. It is the island's highest-rated all-inclusive on Kayak (9.1), its 169 suites are a short walk or cab from San Miguel's restaurants and the ferry pier, and the snorkeling and diving start at its dock. Just don't book it expecting a sandy beach.
If you're on the island to dive or want a proper beach for kids, go south to Iberostar Waves Cozumel, the best-rated of the beach resorts near Palancar and the national marine park. On a budget, Occidental Cozumel and Allegro Cozumel give you sandy beaches and reef access from under $200 a night on average in the low season. Grand Park Royal Cozumel is the pick for daily snorkeling on Paradise Reef with town nearby.
We'd be cautious with Secrets Aura Cozumel. It's the obvious adults-only choice, but at 6.8 on Kayak it trails every other resort on our list. Couples who want an adults-only resort with polish should compare it with Secrets Akumal or the Playa del Carmen resorts in our Riviera Maya guide. These picks are based on Kayak ratings and review themes, Kayak's monthly price data and each resort's position relative to the reefs, town and cruise piers; we have not stayed at these resorts for this review.

Cozumel all-inclusive resorts by area: north, town and south
Cozumel is about 48 km long and 16 km wide, and almost everything tourists use is on the sheltered west coast facing the mainland. Where you stay along it decides your beach, your snorkeling and how much you see the cruise crowds.
| Area | Shoreline | Snorkeling | Town access | Resorts on our list |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North of town | Mostly rocky, steps or ladders into the water | Good from shore | 5–15 min | (Mostly smaller hotels) |
| Downtown San Miguel and just south (Km 1–4) | Docks and rocky edges; little sand | Good from shore at Paradise Reef and dock areas | Walk or short cab | Cozumel Palace, Hotel Cozumel & Resort, Grand Park Royal |
| South hotel zone (Km 12–18) | Sandy beaches | Boat trips to Palancar and the marine park; some shore snorkeling | 15–25 min | Secrets Aura, Sunscape Sabor, Allegro, Occidental, Iberostar Waves |
| East coast | Wild, windward beaches with surf | Not safe for casual swimming | 30+ min | None |
North vs south
Regulars on the Tripadvisor Cozumel forum sum it up consistently: the north and the area near town have rocky shores and the best shore snorkeling, while the south has the sandy beaches and the big all-inclusives, with the best reefs reached by boat. The north is also farther from the daytime cruise-ship bustle; the south is closer to the dive sites.
Downtown San Miguel
Nearly all of the island's 88,000 residents live in San Miguel, according to Wikipedia, and the malecón, restaurants and the Playa del Carmen ferry pier are here. Staying at Cozumel Palace or Hotel Cozumel & Resort means you can eat in town without a taxi.
The east coast
The windward side is beautiful, mostly undeveloped and takes the brunt of sargassum and surf. Visit by car for a day; don't plan to swim there.

1Best overall
Cozumel Palace
Waterfront road, about 0.7 miles south of downtown San Miguel
$420–$710 per night for two · Kayak 12-month averages per room/night for two: September ~$418, February ~$711; recent bookings $442–$759; checked Oct 2026
Our take
Cozumel Palace is the island's top-rated all-inclusive and the one we'd book for couples and families who want quality and a walkable location. It has 169 suites on the waterfront road about 0.7 miles from the center of San Miguel and 2 miles from the airport, so restaurants, the malecón and the ferry pier are a short walk or cab away. Kayak rates it 9.1 out of 10 from 138 reviews, and guests praise friendly, attentive staff, the food (especially breakfast and the restaurants) and sea-view rooms. One reviewer put it simply: 'The food was excellent.'
Know what you're getting on the water: there's no sloping sandy beach. You enter the sea from a dock and rocky shoreline, which is excellent for snorkeling and diving straight from the property and disappointing if you want to lie on sand. Complaints focus on noise, strict policies, the occasional maintenance issue and timeshare pressure; one reviewer said the vacation planners tried to nickel and dime guests. Kayak's averages run about $418 a night in September and $711 in February. Families get a kids club and a children's pool.
Skip it if A sandy beach is essential; book Iberostar Waves, Occidental or Allegro down south instead.

What guests say
The food was excellent.
Several reviewers say the resort has no real beach, just a rocky shoreline and dock, and others mention noise, strict policies and vacation planners who tried to nickel and dime guests.
Cozumel forum regulars recommend Cozumel Palace as highly rated, walkable to town and good for snorkeling, though one poster said the snorkeling right there isn't great.
2Best for divers and families
Iberostar Waves Cozumel
Southern coast road, Km 17.8
$225–$495 per night for two · Kayak 12-month averages per room/night for two: September ~$225, December ~$493; checked Oct 2026
Our take
Iberostar Waves Cozumel, still called Iberostar Cozumel by many repeat guests, is our pick for divers and families who want to be close to the reefs. It sits on the beach at Km 17.8 on the southern coast road, about 10 miles from town and, according to Kayak, roughly 2.5 miles from Palancar Reef and 3.3 miles from the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park. It scores 8.4 out of 10 from 473 Kayak reviews, with praise for varied, tasty food, well-kept pools and beach access, clean rooms and common areas, friendly service, a family-friendly atmosphere and good diving facilities.
The complaints are typical of an older resort: staff attitudes that vary from person to person, maintenance problems such as a lack of hot water or noisy air conditioning, bathroom pipe smells, evening mosquitoes and limited variety at the specialty restaurants. Prices are fair, with Kayak averages from about $225 a night in September to $493 in December. We'd book it for a dive-focused trip or a family beach week, pack insect repellent for the evenings, and plan on taxis for nights in town.
Skip it if You want to walk to town or need a newly renovated room.

Critical reviews mention inconsistent staff attitudes, occasional maintenance problems such as no hot water or noisy air conditioning, unpleasant bathroom pipe smells, evening mosquitoes and limited specialty-restaurant variety.
3Best for snorkeling plus town
Grand Park Royal Cozumel
Road to Chankanaab, Km 3.5 (south of town)
$230–$345 per night for two · Kayak 12-month averages per room/night for two: October ~$228, February ~$343; checked Oct 2026
Our take
Grand Park Royal Cozumel is the best-placed big all-inclusive for snorkelers who also want town. It's at Km 3.5 on the road to Chankanaab, about 1.8 miles from downtown and 3.5 miles from the airport, with 342 rooms and a private beach club across the road, reached by an underpass, where guests get exclusive access to Paradise Reef for snorkeling and swimming. Kayak scores it 7.9 out of 10 from 1,793 reviews, with averages from about $228 a night in October to $343 in February.
Guests praise the location, attentive staff, the all-inclusive value, the buffet and the live entertainment. The weak spots are the facilities: some guests found the main pool closed or under renovation, the pools and hot tubs cold, beach chairs scarce and bars closing early, along with hot-water and air-conditioning problems and one pest report. It's also close to the southern cruise piers, so expect busier water on ship days. It suits couples and families who want to snorkel daily and eat in town some nights; check the pool status before you go.
Skip it if You want a beachfront pool scene outside your room or quiet water on cruise days.
Our category scores
Pros

4Best value beach resort
Occidental Cozumel
San Francisco beach, southern coast road Km 17
$170–$340 per night for two · Kayak 12-month averages per room/night for two: September ~$170, February ~$339; recent bookings $196–$291; checked Oct 2026
Our take
Occidental Cozumel sits on San Francisco beach at Km 17 on the southern coast, near the Palancar reef system and about 10 miles from town, and its grounds are the first thing reviewers mention. Kayak scores it 7.7 out of 10 from 1,469 reviews, with praise for the beautiful grounds and location, friendly staff, comfortable beds, clean public areas and a buffet with good food. Averages run from about $170 a night in September to $339 in February, which makes it one of the cheapest sandy-beach all-inclusives on the island.
The criticism centers on service rather than setting: slow reception, frustrating restaurant reservations, limited variety among the restaurants, and few vegetarian or non-alcoholic drink options. It's a good-value pick for a beach-and-snorkel week, and the Royal Level tier is worth pricing if you want more privacy and better service. We'd choose it over Allegro for the grounds and over Sunscape Sabor for the setting, and we'd make restaurant reservations on the first day. Vegetarians should pick another resort.
Skip it if You're vegetarian, or service and dining variety matter more than the setting.
Our category scores
Pros
- Beautiful grounds on San Francisco beach
- Near the Palancar reef system
- Low-season averages around $170 a night
- Good buffet and comfortable beds

5Cheapest beach all-inclusive
Allegro Cozumel
Southern coast road, Km 16.5
$175–$325 per night for two · Kayak 12-month averages per room/night for two: September ~$177, December ~$325; recent bookings $175–$260; checked Oct 2026
Our take
Allegro Cozumel is the cheapest way to get a real beach and an all-inclusive plan on the island. It's a 261-room resort at Km 16.5 on the southern coast road, about 9 miles from town, with a private beach where reviewers describe clear water for snorkeling and kayaks to borrow; stingrays turn up in the shallows. Kayak averages run from about $177 a night in September to $325 in December, and the score is a fair 7.9 out of 10 from 1,161 reviews.
Guests like the beachfront location, the clean pools, the friendly staff and the kids' amenities. The weak spots are what the price suggests: limited food variety and quality, rooms that need upkeep (including musty smells), slow check-in and disorganized dinner reservations. We'd book it for budget families and couples who will spend their days on the beach and in the water and eat a few dinners in town, and we'd ask for a recently refreshed room at check-in. Skip it if dinner is a highlight of your vacation or if you need a modern room to be happy.
Skip it if Food quality or a modern room matters more to you than price and beach.

6Hyatt-points family option
Sunscape Sabor Cozumel Resort & Spa
Southern coast road, Km 12.9
Our take
Sunscape Sabor Cozumel is the family-friendly member of the Hyatt Inclusive Collection cluster at Km 12.9 on the southern coast road, sharing its address with the adults-only Secrets Aura and the newer Dreams Cozumel Cape. It has 306 rooms on a private beach about 0.3 miles from Paradise Beach, with snorkeling, kayaking and aqua aerobics on site, and it's about 7.6 miles from town. Kayak rates it 7.6 out of 10 from 1,008 reviews.
Reviewers like the beachfront location and views, the friendly and attentive staff, the pools and activities and the family atmosphere. Reviewers mostly grumble about food quality and variety, uncomfortable beds, aging facilities, rooms some describe as dated or musty, and loud music or evening entertainment at times. We'd consider it for families who collect World of Hyatt points or find a strong package price, and we'd compare the rate with Occidental and Iberostar Waves, which score similar or better for comparable money. If you're choosing within this cluster, the newer Dreams Cozumel Cape is worth pricing too, though it has far fewer reviews so far.
Skip it if You're paying full cash price; Occidental and Iberostar Waves usually give more for similar money.

7The adults-only option (with caveats)
Secrets Aura Cozumel
Southern coast road, Km 12.9
$245–$350 per night for two · Kayak 12-month averages per room/night for two: November ~$243, December ~$352; checked Oct 2026
Our take
Secrets Aura Cozumel is the island's best-known adults-only all-inclusive, which is why so many couples book it, and it's on a good piece of coast: a private white-sand beach at Km 12.9 on the southern road, a few hundred yards from Paradise Beach, with a PADI dive center and pier. It's about 15 minutes by car from San Miguel.
But we'd book it with eyes open. Kayak scores it 6.8 out of 10 from 834 reviews, the lowest on our Cozumel list, and the recurring complaints are cleanliness, outdated facilities, inconsistent restaurants, room condition and noise, and maintenance problems including hot water. The staff, the beach location and the access to water sports earn the praise. Prices are moderate, with Kayak averages around $243 a night in November and $352 in December. If adults-only is non-negotiable and you'll spend most of your time diving or on the beach, it can work. If you want a polished adults-only resort, look at Secrets Akumal on the mainland, covered in our Tulum guide, instead.
Skip it if You expect Secrets-brand polish; recent reviews describe a tired resort.

Negative themes include cleanliness, outdated facilities, inconsistent restaurant quality, room condition and noise, maintenance and hot water issues.
8Budget pick near town
Hotel Cozumel & Resort
Southern coast road, Km 1.7 (near downtown)
Our take
Hotel Cozumel & Resort is the budget option close to downtown, at Km 1.7 on the southern coast road, about 0.7 miles from the center and roughly 10 minutes from the airport. It offers an all-inclusive meal plan, so check that your rate includes it; Kayak's average nightly rates for the hotel, around $105–$161 depending on the month, are among the lowest of any waterfront resort on the island and may not include the plan. Kayak scores it 7.8 out of 10 from 1,161 reviews.
Guests like the large, well-maintained pool, the location near downtown and attractions, a strong breakfast buffet and generally clean rooms, and it has an on-site snorkel area. The trade-offs are clear in the reviews: service is the lowest-rated category (5 out of 10 in Kayak's breakdown), food quality disappoints, and the property feels dated and noisy at times. It's a fit for budget travelers and divers who will spend days on boats and evenings in town, not for anyone who wants a polished resort experience or great all-inclusive dining.
Skip it if You want attentive service, good food or a modern resort.
Our category scores

Pros & cons
Cozumel for an all-inclusive: why go, why not
Reasons to go
- World-class reefs, including Palancar and a national marine park
- The west coast rarely gets sargassum
- Cheaper than Cancun at the same quality level
- Direct flights from several U.S. hubs; the airport is 2 miles from town
- Calm, clear water on the sheltered west coast
- Walkable downtown with restaurants and the malecón
Reasons to think twice
- Fewer and older resorts than Cancun or the Riviera Maya
- Weak adults-only choice
- Cruise-ship crowds in town and at popular sites
- Resorts near town have docks, not sandy beaches
- Thinner flight schedule; via Cancun means a ferry
- Hurricane exposure from August to October
Diving and snorkeling: why the reefs decide where you stay
The reefs are the reason to choose Cozumel over Cancun. The Mexican government created the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park in 1996 to protect a large section of the southern reef; it is a Ramsar wetland and part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, home to more than 1,000 marine species, according to Wikipedia. Palancar Reef, on the island's southwest, is the best-known dive site.
How that shapes your resort choice:
- Shore snorkelers: stay near town or north of it, where you can step off a dock onto reef. Cozumel Palace's dock and Grand Park Royal's beach club on Paradise Reef are the easiest options on our list.
- Divers: stay south. Iberostar Waves is about 2.5 miles from Palancar Reef and 3.3 miles from the national park, per Kayak, and Occidental sits on San Francisco beach near the Palancar system. Secrets Aura has its own PADI dive center and pier.
- Families with young snorkelers: the sandy southern beaches at Allegro, Occidental and Iberostar Waves are gentler entry points, and reviewers mention clear water and kayaks.
Cozumel's reefs have taken hits: Hurricanes Wilma and Emily in 2005 together cut live coral cover by 56 percent. Restoration is ongoing, and in January 2026 Riviera Maya News reported more than 800 colonies of priority species restored and protected. Use reef-safe sunscreen and book operators who brief you on not touching coral.

Ferry vs flights: getting to Cozumel
Fly direct to Cozumel (CZM)
Cozumel's airport is about 2 miles from Cozumel Palace and downtown, so transfers to town-area resorts take minutes and the southern resorts are roughly 9–12 miles away. U.S. nonstops listed on Wikipedia include American from Dallas/Fort Worth (year-round), Miami, and seasonally Charlotte and Chicago O'Hare; United from Houston (year-round) and seasonally Chicago and Denver; Delta seasonally from Atlanta and Minneapolis/St. Paul; and Sun Country seasonally from Minneapolis/St. Paul. The airport handled about 647,000 passengers in 2025, down 9.3 percent, so schedules are thinner than Cancun's and fares can be higher.
Fly to Cancun and take the ferry
Cancun (CUN) has nonstops from roughly 48 U.S. cities. From there it is about 70 km to Playa del Carmen, according to Wikipedia, where passenger ferries cross the Cozumel Channel to the Fiscal Pier in downtown San Miguel. UltraMar is one of the operators and also sells a combined Isla Mujeres and Cozumel ticket. Allow most of a day door to door: airport transfer, ferry queue, crossing and a taxi on the island.
Our rule: if a nonstop to CZM exists from your city at a similar fare, take it. If it means a connection, compare the total travel time with a Cancun nonstop plus ferry; for short trips, the direct flight usually wins. Book a ferry time with a buffer if your flight lands late, and see our Cancun guide for transfer tips.

Cruise-ship crowds: how to work around them
Cozumel is one of the Caribbean's regular cruise stops, and on busy days several ships are in port at once. Three piers handle them, according to Wikipedia: Punta Langosta in town, and Puerta Maya and the International Pier south of town. That puts the cruise traffic on the same stretch of coast as the downtown resorts and Grand Park Royal.
What that means for an all-inclusive guest:
- Beach clubs, downtown shops and popular snorkel spots fill up on ship days, mostly from late morning to mid-afternoon. Forum regulars suggest heading into town after about 4 p.m., when ships start leaving.
- Resorts sell day passes, and most of Cozumel's resorts do, so expect day visitors at the pool on busy days, particularly at the resorts nearest the piers.
- The north and the far south are calmer. Forum posters note the north is more removed from the cruise bustle, while the southern resorts are farther from the piers and closer to the dive sites.
- Book your own reef trips early in the day to beat cruise excursions to the same sites.
Cruise schedules are published by the port and cruise lines; check the number of ships for your dates when planning days in town.

Adults-only and family all-inclusives on Cozumel
Adults-only
Cozumel's big adults-only all-inclusive is Secrets Aura Cozumel, on a private sandy beach at Km 12.9 with a PADI dive center. It's the obvious choice, but its Kayak score (6.8 from 834 reviews) is the lowest on our list, with complaints about cleanliness, dated facilities and maintenance. Couples who want a quieter, more polished stay often do just as well at Cozumel Palace, which isn't adults-only but has a calm, grown-up feel and the island's best ratings. Small adults-only hotels such as Hotel Casa Bahía (9.1 on Kayak) exist in town, but they are not all-inclusive. For more choice, compare our adults-only guide.
Families
Families have better options:
- Iberostar Waves Cozumel: beachfront, well-kept pools, a family-friendly atmosphere and good diving facilities for teens.
- Occidental Cozumel: lovely grounds on San Francisco beach and good-value rates.
- Allegro Cozumel: the budget pick, with a private beach, clean pools and kids' amenities.
- Sunscape Sabor Cozumel: pools, activities and a family atmosphere, sharing a site with Secrets Aura and the newer Dreams Cozumel Cape.
- Cozumel Palace: a kids club and children's pool for families who want to be near town.
Cozumel suits families with confident swimmers best; the sandy southern beaches are easier for small children than the dock entries near town. Our family all-inclusive guide has more.
Best time to visit Cozumel, hurricanes and sargassum
December through April is the best time to visit: it's the driest stretch, with average highs of 84–90°F and the calmest seas for diving. Climate normals on Wikipedia, from the Colegio de Postgraduados, show rain rising from about 1.3 inches in March to more than 9 inches in September and October.
Kayak's Cozumel data shows September as the cheapest month for hotels (about $279 a night on average) and December the most expensive (about $483). Kayak puts the average all-inclusive on the island at about $353 a night.
Hurricanes
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. Cozumel has been hit hard before: Hurricane Wilma crossed the island's northeast on October 21, 2005, with sustained winds of about 140 mph. If you travel August to October, buy travel insurance and book refundable rates.
Sargassum
Cozumel's west coast is one of the least affected shorelines in the Mexican Caribbean. How Is The Sargassum's seasonal guide says the west shore, where San Miguel, the ferry pier, the resorts and the main dive sites are, is rarely affected, while the east shore takes heavy sargassum but has no swimming infrastructure. Early 2026 was a little worse than 2025 on the island, but Riviera Maya News counted 134 tons removed in Cozumel by late February, against 1,195 in Playa del Carmen. If seaweed is your main worry in summer, Cozumel is one of the safest bets in the region.

What Cozumel all-inclusives cost
Kayak's 12-month price data, per room per night for two with taxes and fees, checked in October 2026:
| Resort | Cheapest month (avg) | Priciest month (avg) |
|---|---|---|
| Cozumel Palace | September, ~$418 | February, ~$711 |
| Iberostar Waves Cozumel | September, ~$225 | December, ~$493 |
| Secrets Aura Cozumel | November, ~$243 | December, ~$352 |
| Grand Park Royal Cozumel | October, ~$228 | February, ~$343 |
| Occidental Cozumel | September, ~$170 | February, ~$339 |
| Allegro Cozumel | September, ~$177 | December, ~$325 |
Cozumel is generally cheaper than Cancun at the same quality level, and the low-season gap between Allegro or Occidental and Cozumel Palace is more than $200 a night.
Costs to plan for: dive and snorkel trips are the big extra, so price them before you choose a resort far from the reefs you want. Taxis from the southern resorts into town add up over a week. Cozumel Palace reviewers mention vacation-planner sales pressure, and Secrets Aura is part of a brand known for upgrade pitches; a polite no is enough. Our deals guide covers when prices drop, and our cheap all-inclusives guide lists more budget options.

Is Cozumel safe? Safety and entry rules
Cozumel is part of Quintana Roo, which the U.S. State Department's Mexico travel advisory places at Level 2: exercise increased caution because of crime. The advisory's specific after-dark guidance for U.S. government staff names downtown Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen rather than Cozumel. The UK government's travel advice covers Cozumel within its Cancun and tourist-destinations section, with warnings about drink spiking, unlicensed taxis and unpredictable sea conditions.
Practical steps: use official taxis, keep valuables out of sight on cruise days when town is busiest, follow dive operators' current briefings, and respect beach warning flags.
Entry: U.S. citizens need a passport book to fly to Mexico. The tourist permit (FMM) is issued digitally on arrival at airport immigration with a QR receipt. Quintana Roo's Visitax (MX$293 per person in 2026, about $16, including children) applies to visitors staying on Cozumel; pay it at the official portal before you fly home.
Mistakes to avoid when booking a Cozumel all-inclusive
- Expecting sand at the town-area resorts. Cozumel Palace and the resorts near town use docks and rocky entries. Go south for sandy beaches.
- Picking a resort far from the reefs you want. Divers should stay south near Palancar; shore snorkelers near town or north.
- Forgetting the cruise calendar. Plan town and beach-club days around ship schedules.
- Assuming the ferry is quick door to door. Via Cancun, budget most of a day.
- Booking Secrets Aura on brand alone. Read the latest reviews; its scores lag the rest of the island.
- Swimming on the east coast. The windward beaches are beautiful but rough.
- Skipping reef-safe sunscreen. The marine park is protected for a reason.

What travel-forum regulars say
Travel-forum consensus
On the Tripadvisor Cozumel forum, regulars repeat the same geography lesson. The north and the area near town have rocky shores and the best snorkeling straight from shore; the south has the sandy beaches and most of the all-inclusives, with Palancar and the best reefs reached by boat. The north is also more removed from the daytime cruise bustle, while the south is closer to the dive sites. Cozumel Palace comes up often as a highly rated resort you can walk to town from, though opinions differ on its snorkeling. Posters also point out that most resorts sell day passes, so you can sample a beach club or a second resort without moving, and that town is calmer after about 4 p.m. when ships leave.
Snorkelers comparing north and south agree shore snorkeling is better up north, from rocky entries with steps into the water, while the south has sandy beaches and needs a boat to reach reefs like Palancar.
Regulars weighing an all-inclusive against paying for a beach club note that most resorts sell day passes, so independent travelers can still use resort beaches and pools.
Posters choosing between downtown and the beachfront say the north and town are more removed from the daytime cruise-ship hustle, while the south puts you closer to the dive sites.
In a thread on the south-end hotels, some regulars said they avoid certain southern resorts because there is little snorkeling from shore, recommending properties near or north of town instead.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the best all-inclusive resort in Cozumel?
Cozumel Palace is our pick and the island's highest-rated all-inclusive on Kayak (9.1/10). It has 169 suites, strong food and service, snorkeling and diving from its dock, and it's about 0.7 miles from downtown San Miguel. The catch is that it has no sandy beach. For a beach resort near the reefs, Iberostar Waves Cozumel (8.4/10) is the best-rated option on the southern coast.
Which side of Cozumel is best for an all-inclusive?
Stay on the west coast, where all the resorts are. Near town and to the north, shorelines are rocky with docks and ladders but the shore snorkeling is better and you can walk to restaurants. The southern hotel zone, from about Km 12 to Km 18, has the sandy beaches and most of the big all-inclusives, and it's closer to Palancar and the national marine park. Skip the east coast for swimming; it's rough and gets heavy seaweed.
Should I fly to Cozumel or take the ferry from Playa del Carmen?
Fly direct to Cozumel (CZM) if there's a nonstop from your city: American, United, Delta and Sun Country serve it from hubs such as Dallas, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago and Minneapolis, some seasonally, and the airport is about 2 miles from town. Otherwise fly to Cancun, which has far more flights, drive about 70 km to Playa del Carmen and take the passenger ferry to downtown San Miguel. Allow most of a day for that route.
Can you snorkel from the resorts in Cozumel?
Yes, at several. Cozumel Palace lets you snorkel and dive straight off its dock, and Grand Park Royal's beach club gives guests exclusive access to Paradise Reef. Southern beach resorts such as Allegro, Occidental and Iberostar Waves have sandy entries with clear water, and reviewers mention kayaks and stingrays, but the best reefs there, like Palancar, are reached by boat. Check current conditions with staff before swimming, as currents can be strong.
Are there adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Cozumel?
The main one is Secrets Aura Cozumel, on a private sandy beach at Km 12.9 with a PADI dive center. Its Kayak score is only 6.8/10, with complaints about cleanliness, dated facilities and maintenance, so read recent reviews first. Many couples instead choose Cozumel Palace, which isn't adults-only but has the island's best ratings, or cross to the mainland for adults-only resorts such as Secrets Akumal.
Do cruise ships make Cozumel crowded?
On ship days, yes, mostly in town, at beach clubs and at popular snorkel sites from late morning to mid-afternoon. Ships use Punta Langosta pier in town and the Puerta Maya and International piers just south. Forum regulars suggest visiting town after about 4 p.m. when ships leave, booking reef trips early, and staying north or at the far-south resorts if you want to avoid the bustle.
When is the best time to visit Cozumel?
December through April is the driest, calmest stretch, with average highs of 84–90°F and the best diving visibility. Prices peak around December and February. September and October are cheapest (Kayak's Cozumel hotel average is about $279 a night in September) but are the rainiest months and peak hurricane season, so buy travel insurance. Sargassum rarely affects the west coast, which makes Cozumel a good summer option.
Is Cozumel cheaper than Cancun for an all-inclusive?
Generally, yes. Kayak puts the average Cozumel all-inclusive at about $353 a night, and budget beach resorts such as Occidental and Allegro average around $170–$180 a night in September. Cozumel Palace, the top-rated resort, averages about $418–$711, well below Cancun's top adults-only resorts. The trade-off is fewer, older resorts and a thinner choice of adults-only options.
