Quick answer
- The best Punta Cana all-inclusive resorts for most travelers in 2026 are Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana (adults-only, 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 9,749 reviews) and its family twin Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana (4.9 from 7,567 reviews), about 6 miles from the airport.
- Best value: Majestic Elegance Punta Cana (4.6, about $290 to $520 a night in Kayak's monthly averages) for couples and families, and Dreams Onyx in Uvero Alto (4.6, $320 to $622) for families who want a water park.
- Best adults-only: Secrets Cap Cana is the highest-ranked big resort in Punta Cana on Tripadvisor (4.8 from 26,187 reviews); Excellence Punta Cana (4.5 from 25,548) is the quieter, cheaper pick in Uvero Alto.
- Choose the area before the hotel: Cap Cana is 15 to 30 minutes from PUJ airport, Bávaro and Arena Gorda about 30, and Uvero Alto 40 to 60 minutes.
- Sargassum seaweed is the biggest trip risk. 2026 is a record year for floating seaweed in the Atlantic, and complaints cluster from late spring into early fall; December to April is the safest window.
- US travelers need a passport and the free e-ticket from eticket.migracion.gob.do. Ignore look-alike sites that charge a fee.
Our verdict
Our verdict: book Cap Cana if you can afford it, Bávaro or Uvero Alto if you can't
If budget allows, we would book Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana for an adults-only trip or Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana with kids. They are the same beachfront complex split in two, both sit at 4.9 on Tripadvisor, both are a short ride from the airport, and the review pattern is unusually consistent about service. Expect to pay a lot: Kayak's 12-month averages run from about $630 a night in the cheapest month to more than $1,100 in February.
Couples who want more privacy for the money should look at Secrets Cap Cana next door, or Excellence Punta Cana in Uvero Alto, which costs less and still scores 4.5 across more than 25,000 reviews. For the best value with a club upgrade, Majestic Elegance is our pick; for families who want slides and teen clubs without Cap Cana prices, Dreams Onyx.
The big mega-resorts (Hard Rock, Lopesan, Barceló Bávaro Palace, Royalton Bávaro) are fun and well located, but their reviews split hard on food and upkeep. Book them for activities, not for polish. Whatever you choose, plan around sargassum: go between December and April, or pick a resort with pools good enough to carry the trip if the beach is brown.

Punta Cana all-inclusive resorts by area: where to stay
"Punta Cana" on a booking site usually means a long strip of coast in La Altagracia province, not one town. The area you pick decides your transfer time, how calm the water is, and how much seaweed you are likely to see. Transfer estimates below come from Suntransfers and Hoppa; add time at check-in and in traffic.
| Area | From PUJ | Beach and vibe | Resorts on this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cap Cana | 15 to 30 min | Gated, upscale, Juanillo Beach; calmest and priciest | Hyatt Ziva, Hyatt Zilara, Secrets Cap Cana, Sanctuary |
| Cabeza de Toro | Under 30 min (between PUJ and Bávaro) | Smaller, reef-protected bay between the airport and Bávaro | (budget and mid-range options) |
| Bávaro | About 30 min | The classic long, wide beach; busy with boats and vendors | Lopesan, Barceló Bávaro Palace |
| Arena Gorda / Arena Blanca | About 12 to 13 miles (Tripadvisor) | Big resort row north of Bávaro | Majestic Elegance, Royalton Bávaro |
| Macao | About 13 miles | Open Atlantic beach with surf; golf | Hard Rock |
| Uvero Alto | 40 to 60 min | Wild, golden sand, more waves, fewer boats | Excellence Punta Cana, Breathless, Dreams Onyx |
Our rule of thumb
Pick Cap Cana for the shortest transfer and the most polished resorts. Pick Bávaro if you want to walk a long beach and do not mind boats and beach vendors. Pick Uvero Alto if you want space and quiet and can accept a longer ride and rougher water. A regular on the Tripadvisor Punta Cana forum summed up Uvero Alto as golden sand and wavier water but no boats, which matches the review pattern we saw.

Our take
This is the resort we would book first in Punta Cana if the budget stretches. Tripadvisor rates it 4.9 from 9,749 reviews and gave it a Travelers' Choice Best of the Best award for 2026, and Kayak guests score it 9.3. The praise is specific and consistent: staff who remember names, a non-self-serve buffet, a big pool and live music by day, and shows at night. It is about 6 miles from the airport, so most guests are at the pool within an hour of landing.
The adults-only side shares a site with family-friendly Hyatt Ziva, and Zilara guests can use Ziva's restaurants. That gives you more dining choice than a 375-room resort usually has, but also means some noise if you wander over. The weak spots are the club upgrade, which several guests said was not worth the money, food that is inconsistent in low season when some restaurants close, and recent construction that not every guest was warned about. Sargassum reaches Juanillo Beach too. Book it for service and an easy trip; skip the club unless the price gap is small.
Skip it if You want nightlife beyond resort shows, or you are traveling in low season and care most about trying every restaurant.

What guests say
This was by far the most beautiful resort I've ever stayed at.
We paid for club - honestly don't bother, we never had a butler which we were supposed to have
we were not informed about the construction taking place at the resort.
The ocean water was lovely, except for the seaweed, but there isn't anything the resort can really do about that.
2Best for families
Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana

Guest ratings
Tripadvisor4.9/5 · 7,567Kayak8.9/10 · 426Booking.com8.9/10 · 160Checked Oct 2026; review counts in grey.
Our take
Hyatt Ziva is the best family all-inclusive in Punta Cana if you can pay Cap Cana prices. It scores 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 7,567 reviews and 8.9 on Kayak, and the review pattern is the same as at its adults-only twin: excellent, warm service and immaculate grounds. Families get a water park with a lazy river and slides, a kids club for ages 3 to 12, a game room and evening shows, while parents can escape to an adults-only side and the club pool.
The drawbacks are real. A 375-room family resort can feel short on à la carte restaurants; one reviewer counted four plus a buffet for families, since some venues are adults-only. Reviewers in July and September 2026 described the beach as unusable for long stretches because of seaweed, and the pools have no ocean view. At $630 to $1,275 a night in Kayak's monthly averages, you are paying roughly double what Dreams Onyx or Majestic Elegance cost. Book it for a short transfer, top service and a safe, contained resort for younger kids; look elsewhere if beach time is the main event in summer.
Skip it if Your family wants a huge choice of restaurants and nightlife, or you are going in August and the beach is the priority.

- 4.9 on Tripadvisor; service and cleanliness praised constantly

What guests say
Everything is immaculately maintained and the food is amazing.
The beach was virtually unusable throughout our stay due to heavy seaweed accumulation.
A family reviewer liked the resort but said the choice of restaurants open to families was thin, about four à la carte venues plus the buffet, which got repetitive over a week.
3Best adults-only big resort
Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa
Juanillo Beach, Cap Cana
$608–$1,196 per night for two · Kayak 12-month average nightly rates, cheapest to priciest month, viewed October 2026 (August to February)
Our take
Secrets Cap Cana is the safe adults-only bet for honeymooners. It sits at the top of Tripadvisor's Punta Cana ranking with 4.8 from 26,187 reviews, a huge sample for a score that high, and it shares Juanillo Beach with the Hyatt pair about 20 minutes from the airport. With 457 rooms it has more going on than Zilara: an infinity pool, a Preferred Club area, hibachi, French and Italian restaurants and butler service in upper categories.
Recent reviews are less glowing than the score suggests. Several 2026 guests called the food average, the pools fill early (there is even a paid chair-reservation option), and mid-2026 visitors found Preferred Club and spa areas under construction. Seaweed was bad in autumn 2026, though guests said the pools made a good fallback. We rank it just behind Zilara because service there is more consistent for similar money. Book Secrets Cap Cana if you want a bigger, livelier adults-only resort in Cap Cana, or if Zilara is sold out; ask about current renovation work before paying for the Preferred Club.
Skip it if You want a quiet, intimate resort, or food quality is your top priority.
Our category scores
Pros
- 4.8 from more than 26,000 Tripadvisor reviews
- Cap Cana location about 20 minutes from PUJ
- More restaurants and activity than smaller adults-only resorts

- Pool loungers fill early
- Preferred Club and spa construction reported mid-2026

The beach was beautiful but the seaweed was really bad.
The food at most of the restaurants was just average

4Best for Marriott Bonvoy points
Sanctuary Cap Cana, a Luxury Collection Resort
Cap Cana
$456–$826 per night for two · Kayak 12-month average nightly rates, cheapest to priciest month, viewed October 2026 (July to February)
Our take
Sanctuary is the most distinctive-looking resort in Cap Cana, with Spanish colonial architecture and a castle section of suites that come with a butler and, in some categories, private or swim-up pools. It now belongs to Marriott's Luxury Collection, which makes it the obvious choice for travelers paying with Bonvoy points. Tripadvisor rates it 4.7 from 12,292 reviews, and recent praise centers on the grounds, cleanliness and butler service.
The beach is its weak point. Some reviewers describe it as small and rocky, and several reported sargassum making it unusable at times. Guests also say à la carte restaurants need booking early and shaded loungers run short. Price is steep: Kayak's monthly averages run about $456 to $826 a night, and reviews are more polarized than at the Hyatt pair, including some sharply negative 2026 stays. We would book Sanctuary for a points-funded honeymoon or a castle suite, and choose Zilara or Secrets if we were paying cash and wanted the better beach.
Skip it if A wide, swimmable beach is your priority or you are paying cash and want the best value in Cap Cana.
Our category scores
Pros
- Bookable with Marriott Bonvoy points
- Castle suites with butler and private pools
- Beautiful grounds and architecture
- Quiet, 18+ atmosphere
Cons

- Polarized recent reviews
- High cash rates

- The Luxury Collection (Marriott)
- Airport

What guests say
The service was, without question, the highlight of our stay.
Our biggest disappointment was the lack of pool chairs with an umbrella

5Best adults-only in Uvero Alto
Excellence Punta Cana
Uvero Alto
$353–$603 per night for two · Kayak 12-month average nightly rates, cheapest to priciest month, viewed October 2026 (August to February)
Our take
Excellence Punta Cana is the adults-only resort we would recommend to couples who want a polished stay without Cap Cana prices. It holds 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 25,548 reviews, ranks second of nine hotels in Uvero Alto, and Kayak's 12-month averages run from about $353 a night in August to $603 in February. The resort lists a U.S. News Best All-Inclusive Resorts in the Caribbean 2025 award, and reviewers like the lagoon-style pools, low-rise suites, Excellence Club and the balance of activity and quiet.
The trade-offs are location and sea. It is 22.9 miles from the airport, so plan on 45 minutes or more each way, and Uvero Alto's water is choppier, with undercurrents and seaweed in season. Some reviewers say the specialty restaurants open only one night a week in low season, and others complain that the two Excellence Club pools are not policed. If Excellence Punta Cana is full, its sister Excellence El Carmen next door (4.6 from 13,429 reviews) is a close equal. It's best for a relaxed couples trip in winter; skip it if you want a short transfer or calm swimming.
Skip it if You want the shortest possible transfer or a calm, swimmable sea for weak swimmers.

We had an excellent time overall. Good balance of activity and relaxation! Super kind staff.

An August 2026 reviewer complained that nothing stops non-club guests from using the two Excellence Club pools, which undercut the value of paying for the upgrade.
6Best for social couples and friends
Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa
Uvero Alto
$348–$553 per night for two · Kayak 12-month average nightly rates, cheapest to priciest month, viewed October 2026 (September to February)
Our take
Breathless is the adults-only resort for people who want a scene: DJs, pool parties, themed nights and a younger crowd. It is big for an adults-only resort at 750 rooms, holds 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 22,274 reviews, and Kayak's monthly averages are a reasonable $348 to $553 a night. Guests consistently praise the entertainment team and cleanliness, and many say it is a great resort for a group of friends.
The complaints are about operations rather than vibe. Recent reviewers describe slow check-in, lukewarm showers at peak times, food served at room temperature and staff who felt less welcoming than at Breathless resorts in Mexico. Like the rest of Uvero Alto, it is a 40-minute-plus transfer and the sea can be rough. It shares a site with Dreams Onyx, a family resort, so the overall complex is busy. Book Breathless for a bachelorette, a friends' trip or a couple who want energy; choose Excellence or Zilara if you want quiet romance.
Skip it if You want a quiet, romantic resort or you are sensitive to music and party noise.
Our category scores
Pros
- Lively, social adults-only atmosphere
- Good price for an adults-only resort
- Entertainment team praised in most reviews

7Best family value
Dreams Onyx Resort & Spa
Uvero Alto
$320–$622 per night for two · Kayak 12-month average nightly rates, cheapest to priciest month, viewed October 2026 (September to March)
Our take
Dreams Onyx is the family resort that Punta Cana forum regulars recommend most often, and the numbers explain why. It scores 4.6 on Tripadvisor from 13,968 reviews and 8.8 on Kayak, and it gives families far more to do than its price suggests: about 800 rooms, 11 restaurants, 10 bars, six pools, water slides and a lazy river, plus kids and teen clubs. Parents can also use the adults-only Breathless next door. Kayak's monthly averages run $320 to $622 a night, about half of Hyatt Ziva.
Recent reviews praise staff who go out of their way for families. The negatives are mostly about the setting: Uvero Alto is about 21 miles from the airport, the sea is wavier, and reviewers in August and October 2026 said seaweed made the beach unusable. Food draws the usual mixed verdicts. We think it is the best balance of price and fun for families in Punta Cana, as long as you travel in winter or are happy to spend the week at the pools.
Skip it if You need a short transfer with small kids, or calm water for toddlers.
Our category scores
Pros
- 11 restaurants and 10 bars plus access to Breathless for adults
- Slides, lazy river and kids and teen clubs

8Best for golf, casino and big-resort energy
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana
Macao
$399–$909 per night for two · Tripadvisor average standard-room rates, taxes excluded, viewed October 2026
Our take
Hard Rock Punta Cana is a small town with a beach. Tripadvisor lists 1,882 rooms, nine restaurants, 11 pools with four swim-up bars, an 18-hole Nicklaus Design golf course, Rockaway Bay Water Park and what the resort calls the largest casino in the Caribbean, with more than 435 slot and video poker machines. Its Tripadvisor score of 4.3 comes from 43,092 reviews, more than any other resort on this list.
That volume shows the split clearly. Guests love the energy, the grounds and the range of activities, from escape rooms and bowling to a kids club and concerts. But food is the recurring complaint, several reviewers say suites need work, and some September 2026 guests called it overpriced for what it delivers. Tripadvisor's average rates of $399 to $909 a night put it in Cap Cana territory without Cap Cana polish. It is also on Macao's open Atlantic beach, about 13 miles from the airport. Book Hard Rock for teens, golfers and groups who will use the extras; skip it for a quiet couples trip.
Skip it if You want a quiet, intimate resort or great food is the priority.
Our category scores
Pros
- Huge range of activities, water park and golf
- Largest casino in the area
- 11 pools with swim-up bars

- About 13.2 miles from PUJ
What guests say
Clean, quiet in the hallways, never heard anyone through the night, excellent service from all of the staff.
An October 2026 guest called the grounds spotlessly clean and tidy but said the food was well below the standard expected of a five-star resort.
the hotel is very overpriced and seriously overrated.

9Best mega-resort on Bávaro Beach
Lopesan Costa Bávaro Resort, Spa & Casino
Bávaro Beach
$328–$760 per night for two · Tripadvisor average standard-room rates, taxes excluded, viewed October 2026
Our take
Lopesan is the newest-feeling of the big Bávaro resorts and Caribbean Journal's top Punta Cana pick for 2026. It has 1,042 rooms, six pools including a long infinity pool that runs beside the beach, an adults-only area and The Boulevard, an open-air street of restaurants, bars, shops, a spa and an 11,000-square-foot casino. It is only 7.3 miles from the airport; one guest timed the transfer at about 25 minutes.
Guest scores are good rather than great: 4.2 on Tripadvisor from 7,692 reviews. Reviews praise the look of the resort, The Boulevard and butler service in the upper 'Unique' rooms, but complain about communication, follow-up and staff angling for tips at check-in. A forum regular who had stayed there said boats near the shore and limited swimming space on Bávaro Beach put them off a return. Book Lopesan if you want Bávaro's long beach, a modern big resort and evening options without leaving the property; upgrade to a Unique room for the butler.
Skip it if You want a quiet beach with no boat traffic or a small, personal resort.
Our category scores
Pros
- Long infinity pool beside Bávaro Beach
- The Boulevard for dining, shops and casino
- Short transfer (7.3 miles)
- Butler service in Unique rooms praised
Cons
- Service and communication inconsistent
- Boats and limited swimming space on this stretch of beach
- Tip-seeking at check-in reported
- Very large property
- Rooms

- Casino
- About 11,000 sq ft, on The Boulevard
- Airport
- 7.3 miles from PUJ

What guests say
The Boulevard full of shopping, entertainment, casino, spa, and little eats was AMAZING!
The main area that needs improvement is communication and follow-up.
A forum member who had stayed at Lopesan said they would not return because of boats close to shore and limited swimming space on the beach, and another rated its service and food below Secrets.

10Best value
Majestic Elegance Punta Cana
Arena Blanca, Bávaro
$291–$518 per night for two · Kayak 12-month average nightly rates, cheapest to priciest month, viewed October 2026 (September to February)
Our take
Majestic Elegance is our value pick because it scores like a luxury resort and prices like a mid-range one. It holds 4.6 on Tripadvisor from 30,184 reviews and 8.5 on Kayak from more than 2,100, with Kayak's monthly averages at $291 to $518 a night and Tripadvisor's standard-room averages at $303 to $633. Its 597 suites are split between a main section for families and the Elegance Club, an 18+ section with its own pool, butler service and Jacuzzi suites, which makes it a smart pick for mixed groups.
Service is the standout; recent reviews name butlers and bartenders again and again. The weak spots are age and food. A guest in October 2026 called it beautiful but showing its age and in need of TLC, others noted loose tiles in the main pool, and food reviews range from good breakfasts to blunt criticism of dinners. One more 2026 caveat: sister resort Majestic Colonial next door is closed for renovation until November 12, 2026, and WestJet Vacations warns of construction noise. Book the Elegance Club for the best experience per dollar on this coast.
Skip it if You are booking before mid-November 2026 and are sensitive to construction noise, or you want a brand-new resort.
Our category scores

11Best beach for the price
Barceló Bávaro Palace
Bávaro Beach
$240–$656 per night for two · Tripadvisor average standard-room rates, taxes excluded, viewed October 2026
Our take
Barceló Bávaro Palace sits on one of the best-known stretches of Bávaro Beach, and that beach is still the main reason to book it. It is a resort complex with 1,402 rooms and, according to Barceló, 11 restaurants, a 24-hour casino, two nightclubs, a golf course, a teen club for ages 13 to 17, a convention center and even its own church and train. It is only 6.7 miles from the airport, and Tripadvisor's average rates of $240 to $656 a night make it one of the cheaper ways onto this beach.
Its Tripadvisor score is a middling 4.0 from 34,685 reviews, and in October 2026 Tripadvisor's listing displayed a notice that it was investigating possible interference with reviews for this property, which is unusual and worth knowing. Recent reviewers mention loose tiles in the main pool, uneven cleanliness and rooms that need repair, while others are happy with the food and staff. We would book it for a budget-conscious group or family that wants a big beach and endless activities, and pay for the Premium level; skip it if you expect luxury polish.
Skip it if You want a polished, well-maintained resort or a quiet atmosphere.

12Best for activities and teens
Royalton Bávaro, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort & Casino
Arena Gorda, Bávaro
$231–$606 per night for two · Tripadvisor average standard-room rates, taxes excluded, viewed October 2026
Our take
Royalton Bávaro is now part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, so Bonvoy members can earn points on a lively family resort with a lazy river, splash pad, FlowRider surf machine (extra fee), kids and teen programs, a casino and a Diamond Club with butlers. WestJet Vacations lists 730 rooms and eight restaurants, and the reservation-free dining model is a plus for families who hate booking dinner. Tripadvisor rates it 4.3 from 14,343 reviews, with average rates of $231 to $606 a night.
The review pattern is consistent: activities and Diamond Club butlers earn five stars, while maintenance, room condition and food draw complaints. One October 2026 reviewer's headline captured it well: great family fun, but do not confuse it with luxury. Timing matters too. A property-wide maintenance program is closing pools, restaurants and some rooms in rotation until November 16, 2026. Book Royalton Bávaro for an active family trip after the works finish, ideally in Diamond Club; skip it if you want a refined couples resort.
Skip it if You are traveling before mid-November 2026 or want a polished, quiet resort.

Pros & cons
Punta Cana for an all-inclusive: why go, why not
Reasons to go
- Nonstop flights of about 4 hours from New York and under 5 from Chicago
- Huge choice at every budget, from about $230 to more than $1,100 a night
- Long, palm-lined beaches, with Bávaro the classic postcard view
- Warm all year, with average highs of 83 to 90°F
- Strong adults-only and family resorts side by side
- Simple entry for US citizens: passport plus a free online form
Reasons to think twice
- Sargassum seaweed hits this east-facing coast in most springs and summers, and 2026 is a heavy year
- Open Atlantic surf and currents at Uvero Alto and Macao
- Mega-resorts with 1,000+ rooms can mean long walks and dinner-reservation scrambles
- Little to do off-resort without booking tours; there is no walkable town center
- Food is the most common complaint even at resorts rated 4.5 and up
- U.S. State Department Level 2 advisory for crime
How to choose the best all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana
Most Punta Cana resorts look alike in photos. The differences that show up in reviews are size, dining access and the club upgrade.
- Size. Hard Rock has 1,882 rooms and Barceló Bávaro Palace 1,402, according to their Tripadvisor listings. Big resorts mean more pools and shows, but also long walks and a scramble for à la carte reservations. Hyatt Zilara and Ziva have 375 rooms each.
- Reservations. Guests at several resorts on this list say specialty restaurants open only some nights in low season. If you are going between May and November, assume fewer restaurants and plan on the buffet more often.
- Club levels. Preferred Club, Diamond Club, Excellence Club and Elegance Club add a lounge, better drinks and sometimes a butler. Reviews are mixed: some guests at Hyatt Zilara said the club was not worth it, while Royalton and Majestic guests often call the butler the best part of the trip.
- Age policy. Adults-only resorts here are 18+. Several family resorts have adults-only club sections, which is the best compromise for multigenerational trips.
We weighted our scores toward service, food consistency and how each resort handles sargassum, because those are the issues that drive one-bubble reviews.
Best adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana
Punta Cana is one of the strongest adults-only markets in the Caribbean, and the best options cluster in two places.
Cap Cana: polish and short transfers
Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana is our top pick, with a Travelers' Choice Best of the Best 2026 badge on Tripadvisor. Secrets Cap Cana next door is larger (457 rooms) and ranks first among Punta Cana hotels on Tripadvisor's popularity list at 4.8 from 26,187 reviews. Sanctuary Cap Cana, now part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, is the one to book with Marriott Bonvoy points, with castle suites and butlers.
Uvero Alto: space and better prices
Excellence Punta Cana (464 rooms) and its sister Excellence El Carmen (4.6 from 13,429 reviews) are quieter and usually cheaper than Cap Cana. Breathless Punta Cana is the social option, with a party crowd and a lively pool scene, and it shares a site with Dreams Onyx.
Also worth a look
JOIA Bávaro by Iberostar scores 4.8 from 16,271 Tripadvisor reviews and is a strong Bávaro choice for adults. Secrets Royal Beach (4.6) sits on Bávaro Beach. Iberostar Grand Bávaro is also adults-only, but we could not confirm a current rating, so we left it off the ranked list. For more options across the region, see our adults-only all-inclusive guide.
Punta Cana all-inclusive family resorts that are worth the money
For families, the two questions are water features and how much the kids club does.
- Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana has a water park with a lazy river and slides, a kids club for ages 3 to 12 and an adults-only side and club pool for parents. It costs the most of our family picks.
- Dreams Onyx in Uvero Alto has about 800 rooms, 11 restaurants, 10 bars, six pools, slides and a lazy river, plus kids and teen clubs, according to its Tripadvisor listing. Forum regulars recommend it often.
- Hard Rock Punta Cana has Rockaway Bay Water Park, a Roxity Kids Club, a Nicklaus Design golf course and the biggest casino in the area. It suits families with teens best.
- Royalton Bávaro has a lazy river, splash pad and FlowRider surf machine (extra fee). Families praise the activities but criticize maintenance.
- Lopesan Costa Bávaro gives you Bávaro Beach plus a shopping and dining street called The Boulevard.
Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana in Uvero Alto is the character-themed option (rated 4.5 from 8,076 Tripadvisor reviews as shown on WestJet), but value scores lag behind its other categories. More picks: our family all-inclusive guide.

What a 7-night Punta Cana all-inclusive costs for two
Punta Cana luxury all-inclusive resorts: what the money buys
At the top end, you are paying for three things: a shorter transfer, calmer and cleaner water at Cap Cana, and more staff per guest.
The luxury tier here is Hyatt Zilara and Ziva, Secrets Cap Cana and Sanctuary Cap Cana, plus the butler and club categories at resorts such as Majestic Elegance, Royalton Bávaro and Lopesan. Kayak's 12-month averages put Sanctuary at about $456 to $826 a night, Secrets Cap Cana at $608 to $1,196, and the Hyatt pair at roughly $630 to $1,275, with February and December the priciest months.
Newer high-end names include W Punta Cana, which has only a few hundred reviews so far (4.5 from 339 on WestJet's Tripadvisor feed), and Live Aqua Punta Cana in Uvero Alto (4.5 from 6,446). Both are worth watching, but we would wait for more reviews before paying top rates. Our luxury all-inclusive guide compares Punta Cana's top tier with Mexico and the rest of the Caribbean.

Sargassum in Punta Cana: what to expect in 2026
Sargassum is a floating brown seaweed that washes onto Caribbean beaches. The University of South Florida's Sargassum Watch System notes that sargassum beaching events now hit many Caribbean shores in nearly every spring and summer. Punta Cana's east-facing coast catches a lot of it.
2026 is a heavy year. Forbes España's Nautik Magazine reported that floating sargassum in the Atlantic and Caribbean reached about 40 million metric tons in May 2026, a record. A July 2026 report in Revista Mercado said seaweed was still reaching Punta Cana beaches, though unevenly. Reviews back this up: guests at Hyatt Ziva, Secrets Cap Cana, Dreams Onyx and Royalton Bávaro all mentioned unusable beach days between July and October 2026.
How to reduce the risk
- Travel between December and April, when beachings are least common.
- Choose a resort with pools strong enough to carry the trip. Hyatt Ziva's water park and Lopesan's ocean-length pool are good fallbacks.
- Check Sargassum Monitoring a week before you fly. Its maps update several times a week but cannot see seaweed within about 1 km of shore.
- Resorts rake beaches daily, but they cannot stop seaweed already in the water.

Best time to visit Punta Cana
Punta Cana is warm all year. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Punta Cana International Airport, shown on Wikipedia, put average highs between 83°F in January and about 90°F in August. Rain is spread out rather than seasonal in the monsoon sense: March is driest at about 2 inches, while May, September, October and November each average around 5 inches, mostly in short showers.
- December to April: the best weather and the lowest seaweed risk, and the highest prices. Christmas, New Year and US spring break are the most expensive weeks.
- May to June: good-value shoulder season, but sargassum can arrive early in heavy years.
- July to August: hot, busy with summer holidays, and the peak months for seaweed.
- September to November: the cheapest period and the core of hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30. Specialty restaurants at many resorts cut their hours in low season.
The price and crowd levels in our month-by-month chart are our own estimates based on these seasonal patterns, not published indexes.

Getting there: flights, PUJ airport and transfer times
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and handled about 11 million passengers in 2025, according to Wikipedia's airport page. American, Delta, JetBlue, United, Southwest, Frontier and others fly nonstop from cities including New York, Newark, Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Miami, Dallas and Houston.
- From New York: nonstop flights take about 3.3 to 4.3 hours, per Trip.com's schedule data.
- From Chicago: about 4 hours 40 minutes nonstop (Trip.com).
- From Los Angeles: no nonstop; plan on 10 hours or more with a connection.
Transfers are by road. Cap Cana is 15 to 30 minutes away, Bávaro about 30, and Uvero Alto 40 to 60. Book a shared shuttle or private car before you land; the arrivals hall is busy and touts are persistent. Private drivers typically get a $5 to $10 tip for the group.

Entry rules: passport and the free e-ticket
US citizens do not need a visa for a tourist trip. According to the official Go Dominican Republic entry page, tourists normally need a passport valid for six months, but under an exceptional measure running from December 1, 2024 to December 31, 2026, US nationals traveling for tourism may enter with a passport valid for the length of the stay.
Every passenger must also complete the e-ticket, a free combined immigration and customs form at eticket.migracion.gob.do, for both arrival and departure.
- It is no longer required within 72 hours of travel. You can fill it in as soon as you have flight details, even months ahead.
- One person can add up to six family members on the same form.
- You get QR codes by email. Airlines may ask to see them before boarding.
- The $20 departure tax is already included in your airline ticket.
On the Tripadvisor forum's 2026 e-ticket thread, travelers note that the newer site asks for departure details first and now requires an airline confirmation number.
Tipping at Punta Cana all-inclusives
Tips are not required at most all-inclusives, but they are expected and appreciated. These amounts come from a July 2026 tipping guide published by Lopesan and match what forum regulars suggest.
| Who | Typical tip (USD) |
|---|---|
| Housekeeping | $2 to $5 per day, left daily |
| Pool and lobby bartenders | About $1 per round |
| Restaurant and buffet servers | $2 to $5 per meal |
| Bellhops | $1 per bag |
| Private transfer driver | $5 to $10 for the group |
| Tour guide | $5 to $10 per person |
Carry small US bills. Dollars work everywhere in the resort zone; Dominican pesos are handier off-resort. Euro coins are hard for staff to exchange. Outside resorts, Dominican restaurants add a legally required 10% service charge, and an extra tip is optional. Budget roughly $100 to $250 in tips for a week for two, and check your resort's policy: a few resorts discourage cash tips.
Is Punta Cana safe? What the State Department says
The U.S. State Department rates the Dominican Republic Level 2: Exercise increased caution because of crime. The current advisory, issued June 12, 2025, says violent crime remains a concern despite more police presence in tourist areas, and lists robbery, homicide and sexual assault. It advises visitors not to display wealth, not to leave drinks unattended, and to contact 911 or the tourist police (POLITUR) if something happens. Read the full text on travel.state.gov.
In practice, most resort guests have trouble-free trips. The habits that matter: use licensed transfers and resort-booked excursions, keep valuables in the in-room safe, watch your drink at busy bars, and do not swim when red flags are up, especially on the open Atlantic beaches at Macao and Uvero Alto. Enrolling in the State Department's STEP program gets you alerts by email.
Punta Cana all-inclusive deals and resort-and-flight packages
Punta Cana is one of the most heavily packaged destinations from the US, so resort-and-flight bundles are often cheaper than booking separately, especially from cities with nonstop service.
- Compare both ways. Price the package, then price the flight and the resort separately. Packages win most often for 5 to 7 nights from East Coast and Midwest hubs.
- Watch the room category. Advertised "from" prices are almost always the lowest garden-view room. A Tripadvisor forum regular warned that agency prices change with dates, room type and view.
- Shoulder dates save the most. Late April through June and early November are typically far cheaper than February, with better seaweed odds than August.
- Club upgrades. Upgrading to a club level is sometimes a better deal than booking a pricier resort, especially at Majestic Elegance and Royalton.

- Royalton Bávaro now trades as Royalton Bávaro, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort & Casino (Marriott). WestJet Vacations lists a property-wide maintenance program running until November 16, 2026, with pools, restaurants and some rooms closing in rotation.
- Sanctuary Cap Cana is now a Marriott Luxury Collection resort.
- Majestic Colonial Punta Cana is closed for renovation from April 6 to November 12, 2026; guests next door at Majestic Elegance and Majestic Mirage may hear construction noise, per WestJet Vacations.
- Secrets Cap Cana guests in mid-2026 reported Preferred Club and spa areas under construction.
- Wyndham Alltra Punta Cana is a renovated former resort building. A forum regular said the eroded beach has been rebuilt but the beach palapas were removed.
- Lopesan plans three more resorts beside Costa Bávaro, including an adults-only one, according to Caribbean Journal.

What travel-forum regulars say
Travel-forum consensus
This summary draws on the active Tripadvisor Punta Cana forum and recent guest reviews. Regulars consistently say to choose the beach before the brand: Uvero Alto resorts such as Dreams Onyx get recommended for golden sand and no boat traffic, while some Bávaro guests dislike the boats and crowded swimming areas. Secrets resorts get praise for service and drinks, and Royalton Splash is described as the most basic Royalton. Forum members also advise trusting the detailed mixed reviews over gushing ones, pricing room categories carefully because agency 'from' rates change with view and dates, and filling in the free e-ticket early. Seaweed is treated as a seasonal fact of life rather than a reason to avoid the area.
Golden sand and wavier water but no boats.
The reviews that are bad or so so are credible. The ones from people in the DR raving etc are not credible.
I would offer that Splash is the lower end resort of all the Royaltons.
Yes, everyone is required to have an Eticket.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which area of Punta Cana is best for an all-inclusive resort?
For most first-timers, Cap Cana or Bávaro. Cap Cana is 15 to 30 minutes from PUJ and has the most polished resorts, including Hyatt Zilara, Hyatt Ziva and Secrets Cap Cana. Bávaro has the long, classic beach and the big resorts, about 30 minutes from the airport, but more boats and vendors. Uvero Alto is quieter and cheaper for the quality, with resorts like Excellence Punta Cana and Dreams Onyx, but it is 40 to 60 minutes away and the sea is rougher.
What is the best adults-only all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana?
We rank Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana first: it scores 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 9,749 reviews, won a 2026 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best award and is about 6 miles from the airport. Secrets Cap Cana (4.8 from 26,187 reviews) is the larger, livelier alternative next door. For better value, Excellence Punta Cana in Uvero Alto holds 4.5 from more than 25,000 reviews at noticeably lower rates.
What is the best all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana for families?
Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana is the best if budget allows, with a water park, lazy river, kids club for ages 3 to 12 and a 4.9 Tripadvisor rating. Dreams Onyx in Uvero Alto is the best value, with 11 restaurants, slides, a lazy river and kids and teen clubs for roughly half the price. Families with teens who want golf, a casino and a big water park should look at Hard Rock Punta Cana.
When is sargassum season in Punta Cana?
Seaweed usually arrives in late spring and can last into early fall, with July and August often the worst. 2026 has been a record year: floating sargassum in the Atlantic and Caribbean hit about 40 million metric tons in May 2026. December through April is the safest window. If you travel in summer, choose a resort with strong pools and check the Sargassum Monitoring forecast a week before departure.
Do I need the e-ticket to travel to Punta Cana?
Yes. Every passenger entering or leaving the Dominican Republic by commercial flight must complete the free e-ticket at eticket.migracion.gob.do. You no longer have to wait until 72 hours before travel, one person can add up to six family members, and you receive QR codes by email that airlines may ask to see. Never pay a website to fill it in for you.
How much should I tip at an all-inclusive in Punta Cana?
Tips are optional but appreciated. A common guide is $2 to $5 a day for housekeeping, about $1 per round at the bar, $2 to $5 per meal for servers, $1 per bag for bellhops and $5 to $10 for a private transfer driver. Bring small US bills. For a week, two people typically spend $100 to $250 on tips.
Is Punta Cana safe for tourists?
The U.S. State Department rates the Dominican Republic Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of crime. Most resort stays are uneventful. Use licensed transfers and resort-booked tours, keep valuables in the room safe, do not leave drinks unattended, and respect red flags on the beach, especially on the surf beaches of Macao and Uvero Alto.
Is it cheaper to book a Punta Cana all-inclusive resort and flight together?
Often, yes. Punta Cana is one of the most heavily packaged destinations from the US, and bundles from cities with nonstop service frequently beat booking separately. Always compare both ways, check that the package uses the room category you want, and travel in late April to June or early November for the biggest savings with reasonable weather.
How far are Punta Cana resorts from the airport?
Cap Cana resorts are 15 to 30 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Bávaro is about 30 minutes and Uvero Alto 40 to 60 minutes, according to transfer companies. Arena Gorda and Macao resorts such as Majestic Elegance and Hard Rock are listed at 12 to 13 miles. Tripadvisor lists Hyatt Ziva at 5.9 miles from PUJ and Excellence Punta Cana at 22.9 miles.
